Again because it’s awesome HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! How are you fellow We’re Not Rolling Ghouls, Goblins and Witches? Although sadly I doubt you will see many of those classics anymore. I mean when’s the last time you saw someone at work dress up as a ghoul? Continue reading “Happy Halloween!!…”
Happy Friday! How is everyone on this fine day? I’m fucking pumped that it’s Friday because I worked all week. I know you may just be like “So?” but I haven’t been working 5 days a week lately and when I do I realize that I don’t miss it and that it’s not how I want the rest of my life to go. I’m not a fan of routine for too long and I think I’ve grown tired of the “Usual” 5 day work week. Continue reading “Working In The Elements…”
I been stuck in this cave,
trying to find my way out
see a light at the far end,
but it keeps moving further out
I hear monsters around me,
growling and breathing
the clouds are weeping,
the sins are reaping
the smell of pain and regret,
is overflowing and seeping
into the fabric of the dirt,
my only weapon is the hurt
I use it like a chisel,
scraping against the rocks
trapped from within,
blood filling up in my socks
been here for a thousand mornings
I’m screaming loud,
outside I hear a crowd
but nobody hears me,
the beast is closing in
its right behind me,
I can feel it’s tongue on my skin
I’m clawing my way out,
fingernails crack and snap
the agony’s unbearable,
but I can never look back
everything is pitch black,
I can feel it’s almost over
but then I look up,
and the lights gettin closer
gotta find what I got left,
and fight through it
when they all say you can’t,
that’s when you gotta fuckin do it
finally I reach the end,
exhausted and almost dead
because this is what it’s like,
getting depression out of your head
Happy Tuesday everyone! How ya doing? How was your weekend? Personally I had a great day on Saturday. I spent the day with a friend I hadn’t hung out with in a while down at the beach and we just laughed and talked up a storm for quite a few hours. Continue reading “Union Vs Non Union…FIGHT….”
Happy Friday!! Whoop Whoop! The weekend is almost here and I for one can’t wait. It’s surprisingly hot for October out here in La La so I’m going to the beach this weekend. I might as well get another day on the sand while I can get it. I’ve actually been fortunate enough to have had 2 days filming out at the beach this year. It wasn’t like we were filming at the beach in a car or at a location either. We were right on the sand all day for 10-12 hours, it was probably the 2 of the 3 best days I’ve had on set so far. Yesterday was the best day I’ve had because it was the first day of filming on the first show I’m helping Co-Create and Produce. WHAT?! I’ll have more on that later but for now lets get into this shall we?
The other day when we were filming the 1st AD asked to go find out what the racket was that was happening outside of the stage. We were gearing up to start rolling and due to the fact that sound stages are a lot of things but sound proof not being one of them we can hear everything that happens outside if it’s close or loud enough. When we got outside we realized that the noise was a full construction crew that was hard at work building…wait for it…another sound stage. HA! Isn’t it ironic? So here I went on a mission to find the foreman to ask him if his guys could keep it down. Now let me say that as a person that usually has to talk to people about being quiet because we’re filming I can usually guess what people we are going to be able to get cooperation from and those that we won’t. I know very well that any construction going on is seldom going to stop working so we can film our little movie or show. I don’t mean little as in budget either. I mean little in terms of importance to what’s happening in the rest of the world when we are on location. Construction people usually don’t give a shit and just like we do they have a schedule to keep. That building, house or whatever they are constructing has a deadline that they have to meet. I actually find it odd that we even attempt to ask them to be quiet or if they could stop working when we roll camera. I mean really, who do we think we are? They always tell locations to offer them Crafty and or Lunch. That’s always the first way we try to buy off people who are not happy that we are filming in their location. We try to blind them with snacks and food. It’s just funny to me because at times I find that some people we work alongside really do think that our job supersedes every business out there and when we are in your neighborhood its your job to work with us and we need silence. It’s just silly to me. So I knew that as soon as I found the foreman he was going to tell me there was little he could do. Sure enough my assumption was true and he actually said that this was the least amount of noise they make. I shared that information with the 2nd AD and we just worked with it. That’s all we always end up doing yet we always go through the motions of trying to control it. Every now and then we get the construction crew that will work with us when we roll and cut but those are rare.
As I mentioned earlier and this may come to a surprise to anyone that doesn’t work in the business but sound stages really aren’t all that sound proof. They look like they would be but honestly I think at times there’s more silence from the outside world ambiance in my bathroom. I don’t even live in a house, it’s an apartment! I’m sure that there is real sound proof stages out there somewhere but every single one that I have worked on are shit. If you have a conversation leaning up against the wall of the stage people can hear all about your weekend inside just on the other side. I think that the stages at some point were sound proof. However I feel that was years ago when they were first built when the world was a bit quieter than it is now. I mean if you look at the insulation of some of the stages one can see that they haven’t really re-padded the sound proofing walls. It makes total sense that they wouldn’t replace this padding because we all know that film studios are pretty broke. That is me being a sarcastic asshole. Come on everyone step your game up and start spending some money on bringing these stages to the 21st Century. Why in the hell aren’t there any studios making their stages “Smart”? These stages should all come equipped with top of the line Wifi, Sound Proof walls and rooms within the stage, built-in light systems, USB and power sockets everywhere, built-in adjustable light grids hanging from the perms, elevators to the perms. I’m just saying some of the wall padding on these stages I’m sure has been around since the 60’s. The wood is old and worn in almost every stage that I’ve worked on. There’s typically also animals that live in these stages. The featured picture was taken just the other day, hello raccoon friends.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I hope you guys have a fantastic weekend. Get out and explore the world. I’ll be back next week with an all New Toke Talking Podcast Episode on Monday followed by the Tue post, make sure and check out THE CORNER an all new section here every Wednesday and then closing out the week with the Friday post. Be good to each other folks.
nothin stressin me today, I see things for what they are
sharp state of mind, you gotta learn from the scars
universal knowledge, from the sun, moon and stars
I live inside of 16 bars, live by effect and cause
always be on point, don’t fall for the false gods
or the false broads and don’t follow the false laws
so much filth in this world, there’s not enough soap for it
I got a dream and a plan and I’ll fuckin go broke for it
and if you ain’t got it but you want it, you gotta hope for it
work for it, sacrifice everything you got for it
do more than the rest, to break outta the chains
no matta what you goin thru, you gotta use that pain
use the hate and the anger, the bullshit and frustration
to spark a fuse into the gut of the nation
and fuck the wicked souls, I see through their scales
karma gonna see you, when the moon is full and pale
Happy Tuesday everyone!! How are you doing on this fabulous day? It’s currently Monday in my world and I’m filming down at Zuma beach again today. That’s now twice in the span of a month where I film down here and get to spend the day at the beach. I have to say it’s official, this is definitely one of my favorite places to film. I mean what is there not to love, you got the ocean breeze, the sound of the crashing waves and people everywhere hanging out enjoying the sun. Everyone is happy. It’s not often that you see some unhappy Fuck at the beach. Think about it…I’ve spent the day just relaxing on the sand watching this family of dolphins go back and forth in the water. Alright enough about my lovely working conditions let’s get into this shall we?
The Walkie or Walkie Talkie as most folks may know it is a crucial part of our business because its our main source of communication. When I tell that to people who don’t work in the business or “Bogies” as I like to call them they always seem surprised. I guess when people think walkies they think only people like the police or fireman would use those. Well we use them too because there’s way too many of us to be calling each other on the phone all day, it would be extremely inefficient. We already do inefficient pretty well, no need to add another challenge. I do hear from the folks that have been in the business for a while that before walkies they just use to yell at each other. Hahaha! Can you imagine? I’m Cuban, I always sound like I’m yelling. So every department has their own channel and when used right the Walkie can be a great tool in film making. However there really is no Walkie training one just learns the lingo and how to use it along the way. This is a mistake because people for the most part are Fucking idiots. All it takes is one idiot to show the new idiot how to wrongly use the Walkie and from then on they will form that dumb habit that will go on to annoy people all over the industry. Some people might bring it up and help him get over the habit but most will just live with it. So I wanted to write this post in hopes of pointing out some of the annoying, moronic and just plain stupid shit that some people do on Walkie.
Now I work in production so I can only go on about the recurring problems that we have on channel 1. I’m sure the other departments have their own stories of stupidity but these are strictly based on working in the production department. First off there’s the person that chooses to immediately press the Walkie button and start speaking no matter what is happening on the radio. This is usually the 1st AD. No matter what is going on over the radio if they need something they will usually step all over the person talking to make their needs known. Now I get it, I know the 1st AD is on a schedule and trying to move things along and that we are their to help him with that mission. That means that whenever he asks for something we get it. The problem with knowingly stepping on people is that at times either the beginning of your transmission won’t come through or none of it will. This is a problem because if you need something we may not have heard it. I know that the 1st always has to be able to chime in but I think it would help a bit if instead of just pushing the Walkie button and Talking they said something like “Breaker Breaker!” I know a few 1st that use that technique. That way it gives a buffer to the beginning of your transmission and gives everyone a second to stop talking and listen.
Next there is the what I like to call “M.C-A.D”. This is the person that does not clip their walkie mic to their shirt and therefore palms the thing, brings it way to close to their mouth like an M.C in a rap battle EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. they speak. I wish I could say that the amount of people who have this habit is small but I just can’t lie. There is a lot of mic mouthing going on in the business. This is why I always recommend that everyone at least once in their film industry career carry a second walkie or like we call it “A side arm” and listen to yourself for a day. I guarantee that you will never bring the mic that close to your mouth again. There is definitely people out there that don’t clip and have learned the range of where the mic has to be but those people are far and few in between.
Lastly there are the people who come to ask you to do something that they can do just as easy on the walkie but ask you for a reason that is still beyond me. SO, here’s an example the other day I had the 2nd A.D come up to me and ask me where the Wardrobe person was. I looked at him for a moment to try to see if there was something more to the task but when there wasn’t I jumped on the radio and asked for them. They answered and I told them to go to channel 2 for the 2nd AD he thanked me as he walked away and switched to channel 2 to speak with them. Now why he couldn’t just do that all himself, I have no idea. I do have that shit happen often enough that I had to write about it. I guess one can argue that it’s a power trip thing but some of the people who have done this are certainly not power-hungry people. It’s just weird right? Anyhow there is seriously several more I can go on about but I’ll save them for another day.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I appreciate you spending sometime here and hope I brought you with a laugh or two. As I mentioned last week beginning tomorrow and every Wednesday there will be a NEW writer and NEW section here on the site. It’ll be called “The Corner” and will be lead by my long time friend Alfredo. Have a great week everyone.
