Happy muthafuckin Thursday!! How was your weekend? I’ve been busy the last 2 days but I’m at work today and finally found some time to write this thing up. I know it’s been a bit of a low post month here at We’re Not Rolling but don’t worry I promise to make up for lost weeks sometime in 2018. It’s also been a slow month of work which I’ve learned fuels my posts. When I’m not working, I find that I don’t think about work at all. However writing these posts forces me to think about the job which to be honest I’m not a fan of. So in the coming weeks I’m going to open up the topics I go on about here because that’ll keep me sane and I can try something new here on the site. I have a ton of other shit that I would love to go about here and haven’t. This year that changes. I promise it’ll be just as entertaining. Alright let’s get into this shall we?
It’s happen to all of us and it’s occurrence is so common that it border lines creepy. It’s almost as if unforeseen forces of the world constantly chose to interfere in this matter. Why in the Fuck is every job I or anyone in this business get hired on 20-30 miles away from my/their house instead of the studio I/they live down the street from? It’s seriously a pretty strange phenomenon. I’ve lived 2-3 miles from 2 studios, Sony and Culver Studios for the past 6 years and have only worked at Culver once in that time. I have worked at Sony but that was prior to living close to it. The last time I worked at Sony I lived 25 miles from it. It’s happen to me so many times over the years that if I wanted to count it would be impossible. I’ve done multiple seasons of shows that were based 40 miles away. That’s insanity. I don’t know how people drive that far and further to work over several years. It’s bad enough driving that distance over 4-5 months on a show. I just can’t mentally deal with all that time that I’m wasting driving. The older I get the more I worry about time. I want to waste as little of that time on driving as I can but this industry is making that a bit tough.
I thought it was just me that this would happen to when I started working in this business. I remember getting phone calls and thinking “What the Fuck is going on?” I thought it was just my shit luck. Then I noticed that it was happening to my roommate as well and he was doing different jobs than I was but nothing was ever at the local studio. I’ve moved 4 times in 12 years and still would get jobs on the opposite side of town. If I was living in the Valley I would get work in Culver City. When I lived in Hollywood I got a job in Santa Clarita. It’s bizarre I tell you. Then I began to ask people at work where they lived and started to see a pattern. Now after 10 plus years in I know that it happens to almost everyone. Sure there is always those lucky few that have had years of employment close to them but if you ask around set where people live I think you’ll find that the majority of folks always tend to live a good distance from the studio that the show is based from. A great example is the Teamsters, they mostly all live out in Santa Clarita and work in all the studios down here Fox, Sony, Paramount. Think about that for a minute if you’re not a fan of doing like myself, most teamsters not only drive 30 plus miles everyday to and from work but then drive all day as well. I would die. I could never drive that long.
I thought this was only a California thing but I’ve had friends that work all over the country and have experienced the same thing multiple times. A few months ago I made the meme you see here…
And to my surprise I started getting comments on this post from people in parts of Europe that experienced the same Fucking thing. That’s weird right? I mentioned “unforeseen forces” above as the reason this happens so often however I really don’t believe that so what else can it be? If you don’t believe me, next time you work on a show start asking everyone you can where they live and conduct your own small study. Then you can come back here and we can compare notes. I bet more than half the people on your crew live 20 plus miles from the stage you’re working on. I was actually having a conversation with someone the other day about this very topic and we came up with a silly way to take care of this problem. We decided that there should be a website called “CrewSwap” in which a person could look up who of their referenced people lives and has a job in which they would want to swap locations on. Everyone has people they reference to others so these people will be your equal swap buddies. No? Maybe it needs some work but I think I’m on to something here. Who knows how to make an app? Shoot me an email we can go half on this idea. Hahaha! Ok I’m done, drop the curtain!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. Make sure to stop by on Friday for a New post before you start your Super Bowl weekend and don’t forget to check out The Toke Talking Podcast every Monday right here or on iTunes and Soundcloud. Have a great rest of your week everyone!
Happy Tuesday!! I know, I know. I’ve been seriously missing in action the last few weeks. I attempted to write this up last week and then I ended up working all week and I just could not find enough time to balance work, writing and sleeping. Sleeping is the most important of those because I refuse to be tired when the hours of rest are available to me. My last post was about 3 and half weeks ago on Dec 27th of 2017. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks and I’m just now reeling from it all and ready to get back to it. 2018 may have started out pretty awesome but after 9 days in, that son of bitch went a little haywire. Then last week life got way better and so is the balance of life. There’s good, there’s bad, we take the all in, learn and keep moving forward. I’m hoping to be back on the normal schedule by next week so please bare with me. Alright enough rambling let’s get into this shall we?
I’ve not seen many people fired in my time in this business. Definitely not as many as SHOULD be fired in my opinion. I feel there is a overwelhming amount of people who are terrible at their job but continue to work because people keep employing them. I wrote a post titled “Failing Upwards” all about it. This business loves to strut itself around like it’s only for the very best and that those that are weak will never make it but after years of running in the circus you realize anyone can work in this business and that even people who suck at their job will eventually befriend some producer or higher up that will continue to give them work. Now of the firings I’ve witnessed not one was reasonable in my opinion. I mean I will never know the personal details that went into any of these decisions only what I heard from both parties after the deed was done. I’ve seen people lose their jobs for all types of stupid shit. I’ve seen several people lose their jobs simply because someone didn’t like them. I’ve seen someone fired because they gave someone the wrong time to be at work because you know it should be someone elses responsibility to tell YOU when you need to come to YOUR job. Why does that not seem to bug anyone as much as it does me? I’ve seen someone fired for not having the same opinion on a major decision in which they both shared a duo job title. There was no display of trying to reach an agreement. There was just clearly one person with more power that was not happy with the other. It wasn’t because they did their job wrong. It wasn’t because they made some grave mistake that ruined someones life. Instead it was for dumb trivial shit that in any other business would just have been addressed and fixed. I’ve seen people miss entire days of work and not get fired in this business but heard stories on other shows of people getting fired for forgetting to give someone a callsheet. These extremes make the work atmosphere very tense at times. I don’t really care as much as I use to because I’m already use to all the cray cray but people still wonder around supporting this type of behavior and living in fear of it. However I believe that since we film dramatic shit all the time we have this odd need to also bring that drama into our work and over dramatize everything. We take very simple problems and make them seem that they will bring on the end of all film making as we know it. I use to work with a producer who on day one of a shoot the first words out of his mouth were “The shits hitting the fan..”. He went to this extreme because someone had parked in some elses parking. He was sweating and really stressing out about a car occupying a space he needed for someone else. Space. He was flipping out about a spot marked by 2 lines. What in the actual Fuck is wrong with people in this business? It’s really this crazy at times I shit you not. There was no firing on this show but on any other day in the same situation but different show, producer and this could have easily been pinned on someone and they could have been fired for not saving the spot. That’s how insane it is at times on some of the shows out there. Luckily, I’ve steered clear of most of those.
I think most people in this industry get fired because of someones personal problems with them. That can never be the reason because it’s illegal to fire someone just because they don’t like them so instead they wait till they commit some dumb mistake that really does no harm and then use that as a means for termination. These firings typically stem from the chosen few above the line, producers, actors and actresses so even though the firing may have been personal and the person that lost their job could have a case in court, they would never be able to match up financially. Not to mention the fear of the saying “You’ll never work in this town again” that plagues our business like the muthafuckin bogey man. So instead the person loses their job that they desperately need because unless someone is well off, losing a job is never a good thing and the person making 5,6,7 figures continues to live the worry free life judging and fucking up peoples lives as they see fit. I’ve witnessed first hand someone who did not like someone else slowly turn everyone else against the person they disliked to the point that they are fired. It’s really fucked up to watch happen. It’s something we all saw happen in school. Remember when the popular kids would deem some other kid uncool or a nerd and all the other kids would follow? This is the same shit but the grown up version of it. It happens in all businesses to tell you the truth and it’s a real ugly side of us as people. We should never try to get anyone fired for any reason if we are not in charge of the job they are doing. If we feel they are doing something to merit losing their job we should address it with our immediate boss not gang up on them. Lastly and quite possibly the worst part of someone getting fired is the shit talking that most people openly do the next day. I’m just going to say that’s some dirty shit to do. I’ve talked shit in the past but as I got older I learned to not say anything about anyone that I would not or have not said to them personally. It’s just not a kind thing to do. These are all real basic lessons that as we get older take advantage of and think we don’t need to abide by them anymore. Alright I’m done. That felt great, DAMN I miss writing this thing. Haha!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the first post of the New Year. I’m sorry it took 23 days but you know how it goes around here. Please make sure to check out The Toke Talking Podcast every Monday morning. I’ll be back here with a new post on Friday but till then I hope you all have a great week.
Happy Tuesday…Wednesday! A late as hell Wednesday post at that. It’s that holidays…well not really…it’s currently that time in between Christmas and New Years that no one can explain. I mean I guess there’s many people that went back to work already but in our line of work the town is still quiet. Everything will usually get back up and going after the New Year. I love this time off because my life abides by no time. I wake up at all crazy hours and sleep as much as I want. I’ll wake up at 4AM to walk the dog and then start watching a movie till I knock out. Wake up again at maybe 8AM, walk the dog, eat breakfast and then knock out again and wake up sometime around noon and start my day. I just find that time is just not important in my life when work isn’t part of it. So because of this time schedule I got going on I ended up posting late…a day late. Hahaha! That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Alright now that I’ve gone on about my lazy ass time off schedule let’s get into this shall we?
The one thing that I continually find astonishing in this business is that someone can be a complete fool and be the absolute worse at doing their job but still maintain a steady job with no demotions or repercussions. We work in an industry where someone can completely fail upwards. While there is MANY people who work their asses off to get their job titles I believe that there is equal if not more people in positions that were just handed to them. Political hires are what we call them. Jobs that are given to someone because they know someone or they have money and bought they position which is also quite common in our business. I mean honestly if you are wealthy becoming a film producer only requires you to find a film/show to finance and boom, you’re a producer. This can be awesome because it can lead to new and innovative ways to look at film making if the person has good ideas that our film making minds hadn’t thought about. I do feel that sometimes our techniques could use a little polishing and a person that has never worked on a film may be able to see some holes in our process. Like why in the hell 12 hours is still the daily standard. However it can also go the opposite way and the person can just be a fucking monkey wrench in the entire process with their crazy unreasonable requests or suggestions. And the way it works in this business unfortunately is that those people in those positions that are terrible at their job are still smart enough to hire people under them that are way better at not only their job but also the job of said Boss and end up covering up and taking care of all their mistakes. So what happens is that the person that is in charge (We’ll call them Boss X) ends up looking like they are doing a fantastic job and a fucking all-star to person that hired them (We’ll call them Head Hancho) because of the people who Boss X hired (We’ll call them Crew). Boss X then just continues their career for years being praised by his Head Hanchos but still being absolute shit at their jobs. The Crew will never out them because most fear that they will lose their job or be black listed for going up against Boss X.
I’ve written about people being given their positions before but what brought on this particular post was that I always find it very amusing when these people who clearly were handed their job and can’t do it pull out the “I’ve been doing this a long time” excuse for why they assume they are right about something. I’m positively sure that there are people in this business right now that have been in a position of power for 20-30 years and are absolute shit at their job but have surrounded themselves with people who cover for them. Because of this reason when people in these positions say shit like “I’ve been doing this a long time” it means absolutely nothing at all to anyone that knows and has been in this business for a while. This circus does not require any type of time-table that I know of to hold these positions that are handed to people. I’ve seen this happen several times and in many different departments. I’ve been on crews where someone below Boss X offered up a suggestion for how to do something more efficiently and Boss X went against it just because he insisted that his way was the way it’s always been done and no need to fix what isn’t broken. This was Boss X first job with that title and it was a clear decision based on their ego. Because what kind of dumbass logic is that? While it makes sense that something that is working should not be tampered with ignoring a better and more efficient way to get the same or more work done is just fucking stubborn and stupid. I think that a good Boss or just a good person in general never resorts to such lame excuses as “I’ve been doing this a long time” as a reason why others should believe or follow what you’re saying. Trust me if you’ve been doing it as long you say everyone around you already knows so there’s no need to bring it up. However the real problem I have with this statement is that it seems to insinuate that since you’ve been doing this for a long time you know everything there is to know about it which is total bullshit. We can spend our entire lives dedicated to something and NEVER fully understand it because time is ever-changing and usually brings change to everything around us. I think that we need to continue learning everyday and never assume that we know everything about anything because of a timetable that we decided was long enough to make us the all-knowing about a particular subject.
Alright I’m done. Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling everyone. If you’ve not checked out this weeks Toke Talking Podcast make sure you do. It’s a little change from the constant rambling of film industry topics that I do on here. Instead you can listen to me go on about a ton of other subjects instead. Have a great rest of your week and make sure to stop by on Friday for my last post before 2018!
Happy Friday everyone! How are you? Is today your last day before the Christmas break? Were you on one of those “special” shows that made people work right up to 2 days before Christmas eve so that you have to now squeeze all your shopping into one day and pay the highest possible airline rate to fly back home? Sure they could have planned to take off a week before christmas but that would require actually giving a shit and being considerate with the employees that fuel this multibillion dollars and sadly some just don’t give a shit. They don’t live in a world where money is a problem so they don’t understand why our assistants couldn’t just buy our gifts for us while we were working and why airline prices are EVER an issue. I apologize if I’m in a bit of a shit mood before the happy holiday but that’s one of the reasons this blog exist and I have some shit to rant about so let’s get into this shall we?
As I mentioned before I won’t be traveling back to my childhood home of Miami this year for the holidays. It will only be the 2nd time in 12 years that I do not go back. The only other time I did not go back was because I wanted to have white christmas which is tough in Miami. I haven’t gone into specifics here on the blog as to why but the reason is because my loyalty fucked me. I planned my work around being loyal to a show and it bit me in the ass. I know, I know…I’m the one that is constantly preaching on here that loyalty in this business is bullshit and I yet I got caught being loyal. There can be no loyalty if money is involved. I’m not stating that I wasn’t brought back because of a money issue only that loyalty and a business in which money is being made can never coexist. A person can be loyal to their significant other, to their friends, to their family but business is business. If your boss asks you to be loyal you need to know that in no way does that mean that they plan on being loyal to you. Which just doesn’t work. It needs to go both ways. Basically what happen was that I worked on a show last year and was not brought back on this year. Now I know that work is never guaranteed in this business but I was caught off guard because I had NEVER not gone back to a show that was picked up for another season in which the department that I worked with was also invited back. I have worked on one show where the producer changed between seasons and so he brought in all his own people but I had never been a situation like this and it really pissed me off. At first I was a bit down about it because I really thought I did a great job for them and felt betrayed. There was a few weeks that I kept trying to figure out what I did wrong and even had a few ideas as to why. I realized they were ridiculous ideas once I came to my senses but I did think that maybe I had done something wrong. Then as time went on and shortly after I stopped by to visit everyone on the show I realized that they were the ones that screwed me over. I did nothing wrong. I worked my ass off for them…well as much as “working my ass off” means in my line of work and they chose not to bring me back for a reason that they could not even be honest about. I got really angry at the whole situation. It put me in a bit of a financial bind because it coincided with my car breaking down AND a slow summer of work. If you read the blog often you’d have read that I took some time off this summer to learn how to use Photoshop, Lightroom, After Effects and some other programs. I trusted that the show I had previously worked on would once again employee me so I didn’t stress out looking for too much work during this time. Then the show started up and I was given the terrible news.
What makes this situation worse is that I was offered 3 other shows during this time. One was over the summer and 2 would’ve been around the time that the one I thought I was going back on was taking place. I passed on all of them because I wanted to be loyal to the show that I had previously worked on. BIG MISTAKE! But how was I to know? While I have seen many people done wrong in this business personally it had never happen to me. I’m not even sure what happen to be honest because the excuse they gave me as to why I was not being invited back made very little sense. I honestly didn’t even know who made the final decision about me not returning but after my visit I had my suspects which made the situation worse because it made it even more confusing in my head as to why. However I know that at the end of the day it’s just work and that I will inevitably get past this mentally because it really is fucking with my mind state about this business. It’s just another one of those ugly, shitty parts about working in this industry which could be so much better if people actually cared about one another but money and egos ruin it all.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I apologize for the bitterness of the post but I had to vent. It is very therapeutic. I hope you all have a great time off. ENJOY THAT SHIT!! Merry Christmas to everyone except those people who feel they were not about to say Merry Christmas before this year. I’d like to specifically wish you all a Happy Holiday instead you weirdos. I will be back next week with a NEW post and Podcast so make sure to check those out.
Happy late as hell Wednesday folks! I know that this was supposed to post yesterday but a really early call time, some errands and my indecisiveness about what to write about had different plans. SO how are you doing? Are you all working this week? I believe my last day of work till the new year was yesterday. Most the shows I work on go on vacation now for 2-3 weeks. It use to only be 2 weeks but I feel many more shows now are adopting the 3 week option. Which I’m all up for because I always want people to have time off to catch up to life and I feel most people don’t take that time off willingly so this gives them little option. I’m in no means praising that anyone that needs the money will be out of work. I hope you do find employment elsewhere in the meantime. I know those that love to work will no doubt find work in between those 3 weeks to get them through but to those taking the time off, CHEERS! Now let’s get into this shall we?
I feel there is an abundance of tasks that we do in this industry that are outdated, really unnecessary or just dumb and no one seems to want to address them so like usual I thought I’d write about them. First one on deck is assigning someone to load vans. This is usually a production Assistant (PA) like myself or as of late I’ve seem many Transpo people doing it. I work on 2 shows where one of the Transpo Captains…Lieutenant…Capo..I forget what his rank…job title is but they load the vans every morning. This makes no difference because I still find the job a bit ridiculous. Before I get into why let me tell you that there are exceptions to this argument. I’m not saying that the task is always pointless only that I feel since it has been used in these moments that it was necessary and it has since become entwined in our daily duties and it’s just fucking silly as hell. So lets say that production needs a listed account of people getting into vans because of scattered call times, long distance travel or picking up and sending to and from multiple locations then yes I know a person needs to be assigned to coordinate this. However if the company is traveling to the backlot from stage or 2 blocks from the studio I don’t understand why someone would be given this job. I’ve asked AD’s about this and most times they’ll tell me it’s to make sure that all the vans go full. Which is really one of the STRANGEST reasons behind the task of loading because I just don’t understand why we cant just tell the van drivers that. I mean is there a history of people getting in vans by themselves and holding the van driver hostage holding a gun to their head and making them drive without filling up the van? Not to mention that as a PA basically everyone holds a higher title than you so if the scenario came up in which someone got in a van, say the wardrobe stylist, key grip, writer and said they need to go NOW and jumps in the van and demands the driver to drive what is the PA suppose to do? Jump in front of the van? I think we all just need to do a better job of assessing the situation and putting into play these minor tasks when needed and stop incorporating them into our every day routine.
Next! This is for all the Background Actors and Actresses out there. While I’m typically on your side and constantly trying to change the crews shit view of all of you this is one that always gets me. It bugs me because it’s a pretty well-known unsaid rule and with the exception of it being someones first day, they should know. When we break for lunch if there is not a separate line for the Background then please just wait till the crew goes through before you start serving yourself. At the very least ask if you are uncertain if the crew has gone through or not but don’t just jump in there because as fucked up as it sounds in this business there is seniority when it comes to who can eat what and when. It’s sort of very third world country of us when you think about it because if there is anything that most sets are rarely short on its food but still, it’s the industry and culture that we have built and people get all bent out of shape about Background eating before the crew. This is yet another job that at times is given to a PA, food nazi. They basically have to send someone to the lunch area to patrol and kick out Background that attempts to eat before the crew. Doesn’t that sound insane? But it’s a task nevertheless everyone. We currently work in a business where people have priority to eat and are taken out of line when then try to break that hierarchy. I really wish everyone would just acknowledge that it’s just food and how fortunate we are to work in a business that supplies it daily instead of being assholes about who is eating and when. I hate that this is an issue because in no way does say anything good about a person that can become upset about someone else feeding themselves. That type of sentiment would be terrible in a situation where we had no food let alone somewhere we have an entire fucking truck full of snacks, a sandwich stations, a coffee machine, ice cream and every drink you can possibly imagine. Thanks Crafty!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I’ll be back here on Friday with another post before the weekend and then I may take off next week for the holidays but I’m still deciding on that. I’ll let you all know on Friday. Have a great rest of your week and be good to one another.
Happy Friday everyone! I had a 6AM calltime and not enough time to sleep AND write this thing up last night so..here I am mid afternoon finishing up. How are you doing? How was your week of work? Was it the last? Are you ready for a little Christmas/Holiday Vaca? I know I sure as hell am. I do have one more day of work on hold next week but I can only imagine that after that the town will go dark for a few weeks for the holidays as it has done since I’ve lived out here and worked in the business. If you’re not a fan of time off during the holidays then you may be suffering from “Scrooged”. It’s a virus that affects people who are unhappy with their lives during the holidays. Instead of giving into sadness this holiday season and just sitting home why don’t you try to go find some happiness with your time off. Happiness also doesn’t mean going on some extravagant vacation or buying some lavish expensive new car for yourself. It can be something as simple as going to your favorite restaurant with a good friend and having a chat. It can be helping someone you see pushing their car out of the street because it stalled. I didn’t think this would make me happy but I actually did this last night on the way home from work. As I was pulling onto my block there was a guy pushing his car out of a really busy intersection and so I pulled over to the side, jumped out of my car and gave him a little assistance. His face when he said thank you honestly brought me one of those small moments of happiness. Many of us seem to think that money will bring us happiness but in reality it doesn’t have to cost you a dime. I think we all seem to forget how easy it is to find small bits of happiness everywhere in our everyday lives if we are constantly looking. I had a different topic when I started this post yesterday but I like the way this one is flowing so let’s call this another F.I.F post and get into this shall we?
The older I get the more I find satisfaction in my life by embracing and trying to appreciate all the small burst of happiness that despite all the terrible shit going on in the planet or in our personal lives just continue in the world around us. A perfect example of this is laughter. I have become obsessed with laughter and laughs in general over the last couple of years as a source of happiness. I love listening to people laugh, I love making people laugh and I love laughing myself. I mean who doesn’t? Who has ever said “I don’t like laughing.”? If anyone has ever uttered those words I honestly just feel bad for them. It makes everyone feel good and fill up with joy, what’s not to like? It’s impossible to stay angry while chuckling. Go ahead try it. Next time you’re upset about something go on youtube and watch your favorite funny video and try not to crack a smile. If you don’t have a go to funny youtube video DM me and I’ll send you some of mine. Back to what I was saying about appreciating the small spouts of happiness that life offers us, this is a big one to me. I try to start everyday with a laugh and from the minute I wake up I’m in search of that first good giggle. It may come in the form of waking up with my dog Munchie all up in my face snoring or with his butt resting warmly against my head. It may be my cat Angels long deep inner meow for food that always reminds me of when Marge from The Simpsons grunts. It may be something I watch on TV as I’m getting dressed that supplies me my first snicker of the day. Point is, I search that shit out EVERY DAY! It’s like my coffee in the morning which really doesn’t make sense in my life because I don’t drink coffee like that but I know most people do.
I wasn’t always this person that looked for happiness in random places like laughter before either. Honestly I remember being quite an asshole growing up and at times I even recall being bothered by others who seemed overly happy and joyful. I know now that it was just jealousy and I’m glad I was able to recognize that flaw in myself, in my character as a person because it helped me change. Once I realized that I was just being a stubborn asshole and suppressing my own joy and happiness I was able to let go of those negative feelings. Instead of being bothered by these content people I could now join them and feed off their energy and happiness as well. Happiness and good energy from people is very infectious but you have to let yourself be infected..I mean in a good way.
Thanks for reading everyone! Sorry for the delay on the post time but sleep must always come first, I’m old! HA! I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and if this was your last day of work, ENJOY THAT SHIT!! Have a great Christmas, Hanukkah, Vacation, Adventure..whatever you have going on. Go find some happiness. Go find some laughter. Be good to one another.
Happy Tuesday everyone! How is the week treating you thus far? I was off yesterday and spent most the day decorating for the Christmas holiday. I played loud Christmas music for about 3 hours and started laying the ground work. I still have plenty more to do but I had to write this thing, Monday night football, Mary Jane and hunger all demanded my immediate attention. I’ll have some days this week, the weekend and I may be off all next week, so plenty of time to finish decorating. I’m guessing like most in this business this may be the last week of work for your respected show or film. I know most film industry gigs start shutting down for the holidays. It usually is pretty quiet around here for about 2 weeks. I’m looking forward to it. Alright let’s get into this shall we?
Last week I watched the movie “Rough Night”. It’s not very good but that’s not why I’m writing. If you’ve not watched the film it’s about a bachelorette trip that a group of woman take to Miami, which also happens to be my home town. In the movie shortly after boarding their plane they show an establishing shot of a plane flying over what seems like a replica of the famous Hollywood sign here in Los Angeles that sits on the Hollywood Hills. I’ve also seen this similar sign in the “Bad Boys” movies since they too take place in Miami. My problem with this, THERE IS NO FUCKING SIGN! That sign is a prop that these films have rented out in order to get this shot for their film and I just really don’t understand why. As an aspiring film maker myself I honestly just find it extremely lazy. Miami is an entire city with so many land marks and instead of doing some actual research you choose to just make up a sign like the one they have in Hollywood. I don’t understand the thinking behind it and that’s what drives me insane. As the film maker are you just trying to tell your audience that every city is just like hollywood and has giant sign to represent itself. I can only imagine the amount of tourist that get in Lyfts, Ubers and Taxis and asked them if they could stop by the giant Miami sign near the airport.
I mean I get it, it’s all movie making and imaginative but I just don’t see the sense in shit decisions like this. As a Floridian another misconception that the films has brought my crazy ass state is this thought that it never rains in Miami. I can understand someones misunderstanding when they first visit Miami and experience hourly thunderous downpours interrupted by almost faint inducing heat waves instead of the beautiful days of sunshine that movies have established is the norm in the sunshine state. I mean I don’t blame them, even the nickname “The Sunshine State” is a bit misleading.
I hear people all the time complaining about their cities and countries are being misrepresented in the entertainment business. I would like to think that they do it because it helps the show or film better story wise but I just don’t understand how faking a landmark helps the story. At the very least if they would have had a fight scene at the sign and blown it up but just to use it as an establishing shot is weird ok. I know this may be bothering me more than it should but it does. I guess what bugs me is that I know people do shit like this just because they are lazy. They are lazy and they don’t do the research about it and so they make up shit instead. I’ve worked on quite a few shows out here in LA that are supposed to take place in Miami. In those shows we would often have cars driving around and I always find myself telling the prop department that is in charge of placing fake license plates on the cars that in Florida we don’t have double tags on the vehicles. We only have one tag in the rear of the car and that’s it. Still till this date you’ll watch a show that takes place in Florida but filmed elsewhere and look at the cars driving around you’ll see double plates. Do some research everyone or at the very least just ask someone who lives there is all I’m trying to say. Some of the people I work with get so bent out of shape over the smallest of details but big noticeable crap like this is ok? Consistency everyone, let’s just try and have some consistency.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. Please make sure to check out The Toke Talking Podcast that aired yesterday and every Monday. It’s not exclusively aimed at the Film Industry but I do touch on the subject often plus it’s always guaranteed to bring you a laugh or two. Have a great week and don’t forget to stop by on Friday for my Post before the weekend.
Happy Friday everyone! I know this post is late as all hell but while it’s been a good week life and work wise it wasn’t the best mentally for me. Nothing serious, just dealing with some big decisions that may arise next year. How was your week? Do you have any big plans for the weekend? I have 2 birthday parties so that should keep me entertained tomorrow and then Sunday is always dedicated to my favorite sport that I sadly don’t believe will survive, football. I’m not saying that it’s going to disappear anytime soon, I’m saying that I feel it’ll slowly start fading out over time. It’ll begin with less and less kids playing, then schools will probably stop supporting it and before you know it POOF! Trust me I hope I’m wrong but numbers and statistical evidence shows it is losing popularity because of not only the violence and danger of playing the sport but also with the growing studies and findings into diseases like CTE that can affect them not only during the time that they are playing but after they retire as well. The risk eventually will become too much for parents to get behind but I can be wrong what the Fuck do I know, I’m just a guy that bought a website to write a blog. Let’s get into this shall we?
I guess this may qualify as a F.I.F (Fuck It Friday) post. If you don’t read the blog often these particular post are ones that don’t necessarily deal with the Film Industry. This one somewhat does but it expands on that world even further as I want to talk about some of the recent Fuck all logic theories that seem to be going around with the growing number of sexual allegations being brought against men in all industries. First let me give you a brief history of myself before I set off on this rant. I’m a 37-year-old Cuban-American Man. I grew up in Miami Florida as many of us Cuban Americans do. I’ve lived in Los Angeles now for 12 years. I’m single, straight and non religious. I work in the Film Industry and prior to that I was a Head Cook at a catering company. I know that’s a very light description and sounded like a dating form to some extent but now you at least know a little bit about the person writing this. SO back this shit that we have going on right now. I’m going to say right from the beginning that I believe the woman and men that have come out to speak up against these men. Yes I believe them before I believe the accused because that’s typically how I think about most crimes when they are reported. While I do believe that everyone is innocent till proven guilty that need to prove their innocence falls on the feet of the person being accused. The person being accused of the crime has to prove THEIR innocence. That’s the way it works when you’re accused of a crime. Moving on, I believe them for a few reasons but the main one being that I don’t know why they would lie. I don’t understand what they (Victim) would gain from falsely accusing someone of a crime that has the type of repercussions for the victim that this one has. Accusing someone of Sexual Misconduct has a well documented history of constantly being met by a good percentage of people not believing and questioning the victim. If you think about it, if someone accuses someone who they were robbed at gun point we never really hear anyone asking “I don’t know if I believe they robbed him, did the victim do or wear anything to suggest they wanted to be robbed?” I mean that doesn’t even sound like a good argument for his (Culprit) lawyer in court. I think in cases like this more people stand behind the victim because common sense will tell the normal logical thinking person that there’s nothing to gain from someone making up such a crime. It is only when a powerful, rich, famous, beloved men are accused of sexual wrongdoings that we question the victims intentions as well. DUMB!
“They do it to make money so they can sue them” “They do is so they can get their name in the news” are other ridiculous arguments that most will bring up when I say that they have nothing to gain. Please if anyone can name one person that sued someone for Sexual Misconduct and is now living the lavish life of wealth and riches let me know because I don’t know of any. A recent story I read on CNN and corroborated on The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Fox provided by the Office of Compliance indicated that Congress paid out 17 Million in Settlements since the 1990’s. That’s 27 years divided by 17 Million is about a million and a half a year. If they paid off 1 person in those 27 years then yeah, that person is probably living a pretty good life out there somewhere with their 17 Mil. I mean even if they paid off 5 people over that time that would be 3.4 million a piece. I can live a pretty great life with that. However we all know very fucking well that there has been well over 5 victims. The Fox report even pointed out that the most awarded was in 2007 where they dished out more that 4 million to 25 people. That’s 160,000 a person. With that type of money I can only imagine all of them bought a private island somewhere and are living as many of us pretend we do with “No worries”. I’d also like to point out that if you have the odd thought of “Why did they settle for so little?” I don’t know much about these victims but if any of them are just your average income making american 160 grand may be a whole lot of money to that person. Not to mention that financially most these victims cannot afford to stand up to someone who’s rich as Fuck in court. Eventually they are going to run out of money and have to settle. So those of you that use this as an excuse, your money-making half-baked scheme theory has some problems holding up to once again what usually takes down all these bullshit theories, facts. Fame, they do it to get famous or get their name in the news. This is yet again another dumb fucking theory. This one is dumb on another level because who in the Fuck wants to be famously known as the victim of someone jerking off in front of them? Who wants to be famous for accusing someone of raping them? Who wants to go and do endless interviews about getting groped and kissed without consent and having to pretend to break down in tears every time? Who wants the social backlash, trolling, hate mail, strange looks and pointing in public and all the other shit that victims that accuse people of this crime suffer through? WHO? Do you? Does anyone you know or ever known sound like they would use this as a platform to spring their career into stardom? If you do you should seek help for that person or yourself because you are a fucked up human being my friend.
“Why did they wait so long?” WHO THE FUCK CARES??? Why is this even a question that anyone would ask? There is no time-table in which one needs to report a crime. Plus and I never get tired of bringing up this should be obvious point, unless you have been in the same situation and acted different your opinion of what they should have done and when is subjective and based on your vision of what you FEEL you would do in that situation. There is no way that you can feel the fear, horror, stress and everything else these victims go through to make any type of correct assessment of how you would act put in the same situation. I would like to think that if a well-known millionaire grabbed my dick at a party that I would whoop his ass and sue him but since I’ve never been in the situation I can’t say how that’s how it would go down. I know a younger version of me would take a beer bottle to his head but adult me knows that then he can sue me. If act violently then the lines get blurrier when we get to any legal action. I know very well that a good majority of men that I know if were ever say raped in a parking lot going to their car would without a shadow of a doubt NEVER report that crime to anyone let alone any type of law enforcement. Most the men I know are prideful as hell and they would never put themselves through the humility they imagine they would feel in reporting that something like that happen. If you know men like this or are a man yourself that can relate then how can you honestly question someone who comes out against these crimes. I’ve never been a victim of such a crime and I know I can NEVER understand what these people go through and that’s why I listen to them and professionals that have studied and dedicated their lives to helping these victims. The bravery and guts it takes to stand in front of millions and accuse someone of this shit knowing that millions potentially will not believe you is nothing short of amazing to me. That is fucking badass. That is fucking empowering. That is what I’ve always thought we as people should aspire to be. How can any of stand here and not believe them? All our lives we are taught to go to those in charge of protecting us when we are in trouble. Think about if when you went to those people who you trust and are supposed to protect you instead question your honesty.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Be good to one another.
Happy Tuesday everyone! How are you doing? Surprisingly so I’m typing this at work on Monday just like I use to do all the time when I started this blog a little over a year and half ago. I really should do this every time I work during post days so I’m not rushing home to write the up every night but I say I’m going to do a lot of things that I never do. Continue reading “That’s LUNCH…”
Happy FRIDAY!! My 3 day weekend is on it’s way…well I have work but it’s personal work. Which I’ve learned is the only true way for me to feel like work is not work. I love what I do, I love working on all these shows and films but at the end of the day it’s still work that I’m putting in for someone else’s vision. Continue reading “Blurry Atmosphere…”
