Happy Tuesday!! How was your 3 day weekend?…Well if you had a 3 day weekend. Do lots of places close on good Friday? I don’t remember. I could just google that but honestly I really don’t give a shit to know. Why take up space in the old noggin with such trivial crap. I had a fantastic weekend. Probably one of the best weekends I’ve had in quite a few years. It was one of those that I’ll never forget for several reasons. I would continue to go on about that but that’s not what this blog is about. However one of the best parts was that I sort of disconnected from the world Thur night about 10PM and didn’t reenter the social world till about 4PM Sunday. It was fucking sweet. Don’t get me wrong I love my phone and know damn well that I have an addiction to that blasted thing BUT when I have weekends like this I remember that I can disconnect and that there is a lot more important shit in this world and I don’t feel like such a phone fiend. Anyhow, I hope you all had a great weekend..let’s get into this shall we?
Today I want to talk about people in this business that are just plain Fucking useless. Sorry if that’s a bit blunt. I can only imagine that everyone in the world can relate to this topic. One would think that these unhelpful people would get fired but in this business as long as you don’t upset the untouchables like Actresses, Actors, Producers, Executives, Directors and other ridiculously paid people, a person that is absolutely useless can slip right under everyone’s radar and make a living. For example, take my department, Production. I’ve worked with numerous production assistants that are as useless as a bag of old dicks but they put up a good show for their bosses (A.Ds, Producers) and have them think that they are good at their job when in deed they are just Fucking off. It’s exceptionally easy at times for PAs to fake their worth because while our bosses are constantly running the set they rarely have a chance to see what we are doing first hand or check our work to make sure it’s getting done. Instead they assume we are doing our job because we are constantly saying “Copy” to requests on the radio. Now if it’s something like “Bring in first team” and someone copies and doesn’t follow through then the ADs will definitely find out. However when someone requests say a timecard to be given to someone and someone one on the radio says copy. There is no way for sure that AD will know if it happen for sure or who really did it. Sure they can follow-up and some AD’s do but most the time they just assume it’s getting done. The person that copied can easily ignore the request knowing damn well someone else that heard the transmission and is already aware of this persons laziness will end up getting the timecard. They’ll cover for them because no one really wants to piss off the A.D’s or their bosses in general. It’s especially troublesome when one works with bosses that like to speak to everyone as a group as a way of not signaling out anyone in particular because the fucking off of that employee will usually continue. The thing about this business is that there is so much going on at the top that it demands most the attention and focus. So others not really around all the important stuff and just on the outskirts doing the day-to-day tasks and following the daily routines at times skip out on those responsibilities and let it fall on someone else’s plate because at the end of the day we all just want to get in, shoot out the day and get the Fuck back home. Sadly in this business at times that means just get back home with enough time to get the required 7 hours of sleep..IF THAT!! because we can’t seem to figure out how in the Fuck to film a TV show or movie within regular normal working hours. Sorry, you all know that 12 hour thing is really getting to me. It truly does bug me more and more every day. Alright getting back to what I was saying, the task eventually gets handled by another person and the bosses never even know that the person that was supposed to take care of it did not do it because it was taken care of. It’s on the other people in the department to bring this type of behavior up to the bosses and say something but most the time people won’t. Often people will say shit like “I don’t throw people under the bus”. It reminds me of school when the kids that did all the bad shit would tell you “Not to snitch” or “No one likes a snitch” and then they’d do some dumb crap in class and everyone would get in trouble because no one wanted to snitch. Do you know how ridiculous that line of thinking is? Same thing at work. If someone is faking that their working and really just pawing off their responsibilities on to someone else then eventually they are just causing more work for everyone. People that are useless need to called out in my opinion and dealt with because if not what happens is that they just stay in this business jumping from set t set just making everything that much tougher on people around them. I doubt that things will change over night because there’s useless people at all levels in this business at this point and they are constantly hiring other useless people both related and not to take their place but at least if we talk about it maybe things can begin to change and people stop hiring these folks.
Thanks for reading another one of my rants here at We’re Not Rolling. I appreciate you all stopping by and reading my madness. I hope you all have a great week and make sure to stop by Friday for an all new post.
Happy Tuesday!! How is everyone doing? I know, I suck. I missed out on all of last week. I did not post a single thing besides my podcast. In my defense we had a pretty late schedule and long days all week. Longer than usual on this particular show which was strange. I had to make a choice between sleeping and writing these posts. I guess from my absence one can assume I chose sleeping. 9 times out of 10 I will choose sleeping. I enjoy writing these posts but I refuse to be tired in the sake of them getting written. I did however begin 2 different posts on Tue and Fri so those should be on here in the coming weeks once I finish them as they are already half way done. However today I thought up a new topic so let’s get into this shall we?
“Next time they ask you to get them a coffee or anything, just make it wrong…maybe add some salt to it or forget something.” This was the advice given to me by one of the coolest ADs I ever worked for one day years ago when they overheard a hair department employee that was just sitting in their chair ask me for a latte. I laughed at his suggestion at the moment and made the coffee correctly that day but I did not forget their lesson and knew I would use this amazing piece of wisdom later on because not only did it sound genius but they reassured me that they had done it multiple times with great results. They told me that when they had started out as a P.A when they were given food or drink orders from people who they felt could very well go get the stuff themselves but chose to be lazy instead they would purposely do something wrong. If it was a personally ordered coffee with say milk and 3 sugars they’d forget the milk. If it was a scramble with mushrooms, onions and bacon on the side, they’d forget the bacon. They told me that it would usually take 2-3 wrong orders before the person just stopped asking and started getting it themselves but that the technique had never failed them. You know what? They were absolutely correct! I tried this a few months down the line and it worked like a charm.
Now let me be straightforward here and let you know that I don’t believe that there is anyone on any crew anywhere that is never in a position to go get their own snacks or beverage because I know for a fact that all these people have to go to the bathroom at some point hence they have to leave set. People will try very hard to defend against this way of thinking. Especially people in departments like Camera that continuously claim “We can’t get away.” If you can leave set to poop then you can go make a Fucking latte. That funny enough will probably be the cause of your needing to poop again later on. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind getting someone stuff. I definitely know that while everyone does have a moment to get away from time to time they may miss their window to go get say the daily snack that is put out every 3 hours. However if you’re just asking for a coffee or some fucking gum from crafty I’ve been in this business for a while so I know how to tell the difference between someone who is really not free to get away and needs some assistance and just the person that doesn’t want to go and is just asking to be lazy. Also, now that I’m thinking about it I actually will say that there is indeed a position in this industry in which a person can’t go get their own snacks and beverages for long stints of time. There is one position that people are put in where they need constant snack support. I would never want to do this task on a show because I think I would one, probably pass out because I get extremely sleepy when I’m alone and sitting (I’m old) and two I have to go to the bathroom regularly. The position I’m talking about is the unlucky person that has to go up in cranes to man lights for a couple of hours. These people are Fucking soldiers! Because not only do they go up in these cranes and hang out up there in all types of crap weather and terrible conditions with just snacks and themselves to get them through the time. They also have to take a bottle or can with them so they can pee. Can you imagine going to a 30 dollar an hour job and then having to pee in a bottle? As they say “Living the Dream.” One would think we would have devised a better way to do this but no. I have no idea what they do if they need to go 10-2 and quite honestly I don’t want to know. However besides these unfortunate people personally I feel everyone has a few minutes here and there to get whatever they want without the assistance of someone else. Bottom line is don’t be a lazy turd, if you have time to go get whatever it is you want don’t try to get some else to do it for you. Move your ass!

Happy Tuesday and Happy Muthafuckin Anniversary to We’re Not Rolling!! So…me basically because I am the only one that runs this website. Two years I’ve been writing this crazy thing. I know this year has been a bit slow. I have been seriously lacking in the blogging this year but I promise to do better. I slowed down towards the end of the year and for whatever reason I just haven’t been able to time it out well. I definitely had some later than normal days last week and when I got home I had no time to write but that never stopped me before. I use to write these things at work on my phone before I had a computer and now I’ve become so accustomed to sitting down in front of the screen for and hour or two and writing at my leisure that I forgot my roots. It’s also at times been a battle with when I get ideas I don’t have time to write and forget to jot down what I want to talk about and when I have time I just haven’t felt like writing. I talk about so much shit on my podcast now that at times I feel I’m being repetitious. I know it really doesn’t matter if I am because they are 2 different platforms and only someone who listened and read all the madness I put out would even notice but still it bothers me to an extent. The Blog has been around longer and there’s way more posts than I have Podcast episodes so I do constantly struggle with the thought of repeating the same shit over and over. When this year began I had this idea to broaden the topics I discuss on here. I had already been doing that on Fridays with my “Fuck It Friday” posts but I think that rule is now going to extend itself over to Tuesdays because quite honestly I love writing and ranting on here and after 2 years of going on about the film industry here at We’re Not Rolling I think I need to look for a wider range of topics because there’s more shit I want to talk about. So buckle up everyone and come along as I change it up around here. If this doesn’t sound like a good plan to you because you were hoping for a post about the industry don’t worry, I do have one today BUT I can’t promise that it will be like that next Tuesday. Alright let’s get into this shall we?
Today I want to take sometime to thank all the one man army departments in this industry that I feel most times are very underestimated. These badass people are usually found in the Craft Service, Set Dec, Greens, Locations, Special FX and Production department. Personally I don’t feel any department should only have one person because as I’ve stated on here before, I feel the mind starts to go into cruise control right around the 10 hour mark and since we continue to allow 12 hours to be the norm in this industry that means that person is now putting themselves and those around him in danger for those 2 hours. Which we all know it usually is more like 13…14-15 if you include the commute. If there is 2 people in the department they can stagger their call times and one person will be well rested. So ultimately one can say that I feel there should always be at least 2 people in a department for safety concerns. However this is a greedy as Fuck business (as are most) and they will never see it that way. They just see another body soaking up money. Safety comes second to money in these cases. So instead these poor people at times are left with doing all types of crazy tasks alone.
The one I find the strangest is the On Set person because they are literally in charge of moving all the furniture on Set. Sure they are helped by other departments because that’s what normal people do, is help others. I mean I still don’t understand how someone can watch someone moving a couch or something heavy and not offer help or at least offer them the 30 seconds to notice it’s happening instead of standing in front of it, which happens ALL. THE. TIME. I just don’t get it. Why is someone whose job it is to not only move the furniture but also move around the entire set to accommodate the crew all alone? I want to know when in the history of cinema this was decided. I mean the grips at minimum have 3-4 people. It’s usually more like 5-6 of them. How did the Set Dec department settle on a one man crew. It just makes such little sense to me. I mean a ton of shit in this business does not but this really is just nonsense. I don’t understand why the art department hasn’t made a fuss about this and demanded a second-hand.
Craft Services is the other pretty odd one out of the group I mentioned. This one is really crazy because the craft service person is in charge of keeping us all fed with his amazing snacks. There is much more to their job but this is what I always consider their job to be. It’s an important job because if you keep people fed they generally remain happy. On top of that the Craft Service person is also are in charge of all the waste those snacks make. A typical crew is about 60-70 people SO one person to clean up after that many people just sounds like torture. I haven’t been on many shows that only have one person in this department but I have been on enough which made me want to acknowledge in this post that it does happen. There’s some cheap ass people out there.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I appreciate every one of you out there that continues to read my material. I promise to get back to my regular routine and I look forward to bringing you all a new chapter in this crazy little world I created. Have a fantastic week and I’ll talk to you all on Friday.
Happy Tuesday!! I know I’ve been missing in the blogging action but honestly I just haven’t felt compelled to write about anything. The reason I started this thing was to explore some of the craziness in our industry and since I haven’t really been working all that much I think my momentum for writing has slowed down. However I’m trying to change that and get back to writing because I do miss it. I start a new gig tomorrow (Tuesday) so I’m sure I will in no time have some new fresh material to go on about. Alright let’s get into this shall we?
Today as I was making breakfast I asked my roommate about the job he had worked on last night. He got home past midnight and I had already gone to bed so I was just curios what it was. I don’t typically bring up work unless the person I’m talking to does because 12 hours a day is enough time to dedicate to work so why talk about it as well. However anytime something takes all night to film something I want to know what it was so I can make my own assessment of whether all that time was actually needed or if it was just exaggerated. As I assumed he told me the show was a mess and went over schedule. It was a commercial for a well-known brand. What got me all worked up and in the mood to write this post was that he told me that they had everyone on the crew greek out and brand names they had on the clothes they were wearing because it would upset the client. Which for those of you not in the industry means that for example if your working on a Nike commercial they ask you to place tape on your reebok shirt. I know. Fucking stupid but it happens. Now as is normally the case with anything this ridiculous I immediately felt compelled to rant about because it’s a perfect example of some of the dumb shit this industry does and continues to do. We can all acknowledge that this is dumb childish behavior but continue to support it because….I don’t know. I wish I knew but I honestly just don’t understand.
If a person that is representing a brand name cannot stand the site of another brand name tag on the cloth someone else is wearing then that person probably shouldn’t have that job because if that is not irrationally unnatural behavior that needs professional help, I don’t know what is. This person should not have this job. They should be doing therapy for this issue of brand names burning their retinas. I did however tell my roommate that I don’t always buy into these dumb rules without questioning where they originated from. While I’m sure that some of these outlandish request we get at times like not looking a particular person in the eye or mentioning some of their past work may have come from the person themselves I have found that sometimes these stupid request come from some third-party. Like an over achieving manager, an assistant directly connected to the person or at times it can also come from another source with no direct connection to the person but that feels compelled to set up these dumb rules as a way to comfort the person. For example I’ve been on jobs wear the coordinator of the show will make up this stuff because they assume everyone is going to be bothering the person. Which is bullshit because everyone that works in this business knows how to act and how to be professional. They don’t need to be told lies like “This person doesn’t like for you to look them in the eye”. This too is a serious issue that should be treated. If a person cannot stand to be looked in the eyes then a film set probably should not be the field that they work in. I mean there’s literally people all over the place anywhere you go in your day-to-day life let alone on a stage where there’s about 60 of us all pied in there. I’d like to know how this person interacts in the real world. Do they hire someone to constantly walk in front of them and when a stranger in passing casts their gaze upon their master they immediately yell “DON’T LOOK AT THEIR EYES!!” I’m not saying this is not a thing because I definitely have heard and witnessed crazier things in this business but still we need to realize that this is not helpful to anyone and extremely irrational to ask of anyone. I just think we need to talk about this stuff in the open more and maybe that will help us see the error in our ways and pop off some sort of change.
Thanks for stopping by and to those that are returning after these last few dry weeks of writing a special thank you. I think I may have gotten my groove back and this post did feel great writing up so hopefully I can keep them coming. Have a great rest of your week and I’ll be back Friday with an all NEW post.
Happy Tuesday!! I know, I know. I’ve been seriously missing in action the last few weeks. I attempted to write this up last week and then I ended up working all week and I just could not find enough time to balance work, writing and sleeping. Sleeping is the most important of those because I refuse to be tired when the hours of rest are available to me. My last post was about 3 and half weeks ago on Dec 27th of 2017. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks and I’m just now reeling from it all and ready to get back to it. 2018 may have started out pretty awesome but after 9 days in, that son of bitch went a little haywire. Then last week life got way better and so is the balance of life. There’s good, there’s bad, we take the all in, learn and keep moving forward. I’m hoping to be back on the normal schedule by next week so please bare with me. Alright enough rambling let’s get into this shall we?
I’ve not seen many people fired in my time in this business. Definitely not as many as SHOULD be fired in my opinion. I feel there is a overwelhming amount of people who are terrible at their job but continue to work because people keep employing them. I wrote a post titled “Failing Upwards” all about it. This business loves to strut itself around like it’s only for the very best and that those that are weak will never make it but after years of running in the circus you realize anyone can work in this business and that even people who suck at their job will eventually befriend some producer or higher up that will continue to give them work. Now of the firings I’ve witnessed not one was reasonable in my opinion. I mean I will never know the personal details that went into any of these decisions only what I heard from both parties after the deed was done. I’ve seen people lose their jobs for all types of stupid shit. I’ve seen several people lose their jobs simply because someone didn’t like them. I’ve seen someone fired because they gave someone the wrong time to be at work because you know it should be someone elses responsibility to tell YOU when you need to come to YOUR job. Why does that not seem to bug anyone as much as it does me? I’ve seen someone fired for not having the same opinion on a major decision in which they both shared a duo job title. There was no display of trying to reach an agreement. There was just clearly one person with more power that was not happy with the other. It wasn’t because they did their job wrong. It wasn’t because they made some grave mistake that ruined someones life. Instead it was for dumb trivial shit that in any other business would just have been addressed and fixed. I’ve seen people miss entire days of work and not get fired in this business but heard stories on other shows of people getting fired for forgetting to give someone a callsheet. These extremes make the work atmosphere very tense at times. I don’t really care as much as I use to because I’m already use to all the cray cray but people still wonder around supporting this type of behavior and living in fear of it. However I believe that since we film dramatic shit all the time we have this odd need to also bring that drama into our work and over dramatize everything. We take very simple problems and make them seem that they will bring on the end of all film making as we know it. I use to work with a producer who on day one of a shoot the first words out of his mouth were “The shits hitting the fan..”. He went to this extreme because someone had parked in some elses parking. He was sweating and really stressing out about a car occupying a space he needed for someone else. Space. He was flipping out about a spot marked by 2 lines. What in the actual Fuck is wrong with people in this business? It’s really this crazy at times I shit you not. There was no firing on this show but on any other day in the same situation but different show, producer and this could have easily been pinned on someone and they could have been fired for not saving the spot. That’s how insane it is at times on some of the shows out there. Luckily, I’ve steered clear of most of those.
I think most people in this industry get fired because of someones personal problems with them. That can never be the reason because it’s illegal to fire someone just because they don’t like them so instead they wait till they commit some dumb mistake that really does no harm and then use that as a means for termination. These firings typically stem from the chosen few above the line, producers, actors and actresses so even though the firing may have been personal and the person that lost their job could have a case in court, they would never be able to match up financially. Not to mention the fear of the saying “You’ll never work in this town again” that plagues our business like the muthafuckin bogey man. So instead the person loses their job that they desperately need because unless someone is well off, losing a job is never a good thing and the person making 5,6,7 figures continues to live the worry free life judging and fucking up peoples lives as they see fit. I’ve witnessed first hand someone who did not like someone else slowly turn everyone else against the person they disliked to the point that they are fired. It’s really fucked up to watch happen. It’s something we all saw happen in school. Remember when the popular kids would deem some other kid uncool or a nerd and all the other kids would follow? This is the same shit but the grown up version of it. It happens in all businesses to tell you the truth and it’s a real ugly side of us as people. We should never try to get anyone fired for any reason if we are not in charge of the job they are doing. If we feel they are doing something to merit losing their job we should address it with our immediate boss not gang up on them. Lastly and quite possibly the worst part of someone getting fired is the shit talking that most people openly do the next day. I’m just going to say that’s some dirty shit to do. I’ve talked shit in the past but as I got older I learned to not say anything about anyone that I would not or have not said to them personally. It’s just not a kind thing to do. These are all real basic lessons that as we get older take advantage of and think we don’t need to abide by them anymore. Alright I’m done. That felt great, DAMN I miss writing this thing. Haha!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the first post of the New Year. I’m sorry it took 23 days but you know how it goes around here. Please make sure to check out The Toke Talking Podcast every Monday morning. I’ll be back here with a new post on Friday but till then I hope you all have a great week.
Happy Friday everyone! How are you? Is today your last day before the Christmas break? Were you on one of those “special” shows that made people work right up to 2 days before Christmas eve so that you have to now squeeze all your shopping into one day and pay the highest possible airline rate to fly back home? Sure they could have planned to take off a week before christmas but that would require actually giving a shit and being considerate with the employees that fuel this multibillion dollars and sadly some just don’t give a shit. They don’t live in a world where money is a problem so they don’t understand why our assistants couldn’t just buy our gifts for us while we were working and why airline prices are EVER an issue. I apologize if I’m in a bit of a shit mood before the happy holiday but that’s one of the reasons this blog exist and I have some shit to rant about so let’s get into this shall we?
As I mentioned before I won’t be traveling back to my childhood home of Miami this year for the holidays. It will only be the 2nd time in 12 years that I do not go back. The only other time I did not go back was because I wanted to have white christmas which is tough in Miami. I haven’t gone into specifics here on the blog as to why but the reason is because my loyalty fucked me. I planned my work around being loyal to a show and it bit me in the ass. I know, I know…I’m the one that is constantly preaching on here that loyalty in this business is bullshit and I yet I got caught being loyal. There can be no loyalty if money is involved. I’m not stating that I wasn’t brought back because of a money issue only that loyalty and a business in which money is being made can never coexist. A person can be loyal to their significant other, to their friends, to their family but business is business. If your boss asks you to be loyal you need to know that in no way does that mean that they plan on being loyal to you. Which just doesn’t work. It needs to go both ways. Basically what happen was that I worked on a show last year and was not brought back on this year. Now I know that work is never guaranteed in this business but I was caught off guard because I had NEVER not gone back to a show that was picked up for another season in which the department that I worked with was also invited back. I have worked on one show where the producer changed between seasons and so he brought in all his own people but I had never been a situation like this and it really pissed me off. At first I was a bit down about it because I really thought I did a great job for them and felt betrayed. There was a few weeks that I kept trying to figure out what I did wrong and even had a few ideas as to why. I realized they were ridiculous ideas once I came to my senses but I did think that maybe I had done something wrong. Then as time went on and shortly after I stopped by to visit everyone on the show I realized that they were the ones that screwed me over. I did nothing wrong. I worked my ass off for them…well as much as “working my ass off” means in my line of work and they chose not to bring me back for a reason that they could not even be honest about. I got really angry at the whole situation. It put me in a bit of a financial bind because it coincided with my car breaking down AND a slow summer of work. If you read the blog often you’d have read that I took some time off this summer to learn how to use Photoshop, Lightroom, After Effects and some other programs. I trusted that the show I had previously worked on would once again employee me so I didn’t stress out looking for too much work during this time. Then the show started up and I was given the terrible news.
What makes this situation worse is that I was offered 3 other shows during this time. One was over the summer and 2 would’ve been around the time that the one I thought I was going back on was taking place. I passed on all of them because I wanted to be loyal to the show that I had previously worked on. BIG MISTAKE! But how was I to know? While I have seen many people done wrong in this business personally it had never happen to me. I’m not even sure what happen to be honest because the excuse they gave me as to why I was not being invited back made very little sense. I honestly didn’t even know who made the final decision about me not returning but after my visit I had my suspects which made the situation worse because it made it even more confusing in my head as to why. However I know that at the end of the day it’s just work and that I will inevitably get past this mentally because it really is fucking with my mind state about this business. It’s just another one of those ugly, shitty parts about working in this industry which could be so much better if people actually cared about one another but money and egos ruin it all.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I apologize for the bitterness of the post but I had to vent. It is very therapeutic. I hope you all have a great time off. ENJOY THAT SHIT!! Merry Christmas to everyone except those people who feel they were not about to say Merry Christmas before this year. I’d like to specifically wish you all a Happy Holiday instead you weirdos. I will be back next week with a NEW post and Podcast so make sure to check those out.
Happy late as hell Wednesday folks! I know that this was supposed to post yesterday but a really early call time, some errands and my indecisiveness about what to write about had different plans. SO how are you doing? Are you all working this week? I believe my last day of work till the new year was yesterday. Most the shows I work on go on vacation now for 2-3 weeks. It use to only be 2 weeks but I feel many more shows now are adopting the 3 week option. Which I’m all up for because I always want people to have time off to catch up to life and I feel most people don’t take that time off willingly so this gives them little option. I’m in no means praising that anyone that needs the money will be out of work. I hope you do find employment elsewhere in the meantime. I know those that love to work will no doubt find work in between those 3 weeks to get them through but to those taking the time off, CHEERS! Now let’s get into this shall we?
I feel there is an abundance of tasks that we do in this industry that are outdated, really unnecessary or just dumb and no one seems to want to address them so like usual I thought I’d write about them. First one on deck is assigning someone to load vans. This is usually a production Assistant (PA) like myself or as of late I’ve seem many Transpo people doing it. I work on 2 shows where one of the Transpo Captains…Lieutenant…Capo..I forget what his rank…job title is but they load the vans every morning. This makes no difference because I still find the job a bit ridiculous. Before I get into why let me tell you that there are exceptions to this argument. I’m not saying that the task is always pointless only that I feel since it has been used in these moments that it was necessary and it has since become entwined in our daily duties and it’s just fucking silly as hell. So lets say that production needs a listed account of people getting into vans because of scattered call times, long distance travel or picking up and sending to and from multiple locations then yes I know a person needs to be assigned to coordinate this. However if the company is traveling to the backlot from stage or 2 blocks from the studio I don’t understand why someone would be given this job. I’ve asked AD’s about this and most times they’ll tell me it’s to make sure that all the vans go full. Which is really one of the STRANGEST reasons behind the task of loading because I just don’t understand why we cant just tell the van drivers that. I mean is there a history of people getting in vans by themselves and holding the van driver hostage holding a gun to their head and making them drive without filling up the van? Not to mention that as a PA basically everyone holds a higher title than you so if the scenario came up in which someone got in a van, say the wardrobe stylist, key grip, writer and said they need to go NOW and jumps in the van and demands the driver to drive what is the PA suppose to do? Jump in front of the van? I think we all just need to do a better job of assessing the situation and putting into play these minor tasks when needed and stop incorporating them into our every day routine.
Next! This is for all the Background Actors and Actresses out there. While I’m typically on your side and constantly trying to change the crews shit view of all of you this is one that always gets me. It bugs me because it’s a pretty well-known unsaid rule and with the exception of it being someones first day, they should know. When we break for lunch if there is not a separate line for the Background then please just wait till the crew goes through before you start serving yourself. At the very least ask if you are uncertain if the crew has gone through or not but don’t just jump in there because as fucked up as it sounds in this business there is seniority when it comes to who can eat what and when. It’s sort of very third world country of us when you think about it because if there is anything that most sets are rarely short on its food but still, it’s the industry and culture that we have built and people get all bent out of shape about Background eating before the crew. This is yet another job that at times is given to a PA, food nazi. They basically have to send someone to the lunch area to patrol and kick out Background that attempts to eat before the crew. Doesn’t that sound insane? But it’s a task nevertheless everyone. We currently work in a business where people have priority to eat and are taken out of line when then try to break that hierarchy. I really wish everyone would just acknowledge that it’s just food and how fortunate we are to work in a business that supplies it daily instead of being assholes about who is eating and when. I hate that this is an issue because in no way does say anything good about a person that can become upset about someone else feeding themselves. That type of sentiment would be terrible in a situation where we had no food let alone somewhere we have an entire fucking truck full of snacks, a sandwich stations, a coffee machine, ice cream and every drink you can possibly imagine. Thanks Crafty!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I’ll be back here on Friday with another post before the weekend and then I may take off next week for the holidays but I’m still deciding on that. I’ll let you all know on Friday. Have a great rest of your week and be good to one another.
Happy FRIDAY!! My 3 day weekend is on it’s way…well I have work but it’s personal work. Which I’ve learned is the only true way for me to feel like work is not work. I love what I do, I love working on all these shows and films but at the end of the day it’s still work that I’m putting in for someone else’s vision. Continue reading “Blurry Atmosphere…”
