Happy Tuesday everyone! How are you doing? Surprisingly so I’m typing this at work on Monday just like I use to do all the time when I started this blog a little over a year and half ago. I really should do this every time I work during post days so I’m not rushing home to write the up every night but I say I’m going to do a lot of things that I never do. Continue reading “That’s LUNCH…”
Happy Muthafuckin Wednesday….that definitely does not work. It doesn’t have the same ring to it as Friday. I thought I’d give it a try. I’m a little a behind this week and I apologize. This post is usually already up but the delay of my Podcast (The Toke Talking Podcast) along with some needed sleep, derailed everything else. Continue reading “Lunchtime Nap Scout…”
Friday everyone. It’s finally Friday. Another week of film making in the books that most likely ran about 10 hours over because we’re stubborn and won’t settle for less than 12 hours of work. That’s the normality we choose to continue to embrace. Why? Continue reading “I’m Not Doing That…”
Happy Tuesday friends old and new. How are you? Did you have a good weekend? I watched Thor: Ragnorok, AMAZING! I went to a wrap party. It was ok, food was great but my plus one vanished for a while so a bit lame. I did get a fare amount of sleep which is always nice. Did you rest up for another fun filled week of film making? Continue reading “Little Boxes…”
Again because it’s awesome HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! How are you fellow We’re Not Rolling Ghouls, Goblins and Witches? Although sadly I doubt you will see many of those classics anymore. I mean when’s the last time you saw someone at work dress up as a ghoul? Continue reading “Happy Halloween!!…”
Happy Friday! How is everyone on this fine day? I’m fucking pumped that it’s Friday because I worked all week. I know you may just be like “So?” but I haven’t been working 5 days a week lately and when I do I realize that I don’t miss it and that it’s not how I want the rest of my life to go. I’m not a fan of routine for too long and I think I’ve grown tired of the “Usual” 5 day work week. Continue reading “Working In The Elements…”
Happy Tuesday everyone!! How are you doing on this fabulous day? It’s currently Monday in my world and I’m filming down at Zuma beach again today. That’s now twice in the span of a month where I film down here and get to spend the day at the beach. I have to say it’s official, this is definitely one of my favorite places to film. I mean what is there not to love, you got the ocean breeze, the sound of the crashing waves and people everywhere hanging out enjoying the sun. Everyone is happy. It’s not often that you see some unhappy Fuck at the beach. Think about it…I’ve spent the day just relaxing on the sand watching this family of dolphins go back and forth in the water. Alright enough about my lovely working conditions let’s get into this shall we?
The Walkie or Walkie Talkie as most folks may know it is a crucial part of our business because its our main source of communication. When I tell that to people who don’t work in the business or “Bogies” as I like to call them they always seem surprised. I guess when people think walkies they think only people like the police or fireman would use those. Well we use them too because there’s way too many of us to be calling each other on the phone all day, it would be extremely inefficient. We already do inefficient pretty well, no need to add another challenge. I do hear from the folks that have been in the business for a while that before walkies they just use to yell at each other. Hahaha! Can you imagine? I’m Cuban, I always sound like I’m yelling. So every department has their own channel and when used right the Walkie can be a great tool in film making. However there really is no Walkie training one just learns the lingo and how to use it along the way. This is a mistake because people for the most part are Fucking idiots. All it takes is one idiot to show the new idiot how to wrongly use the Walkie and from then on they will form that dumb habit that will go on to annoy people all over the industry. Some people might bring it up and help him get over the habit but most will just live with it. So I wanted to write this post in hopes of pointing out some of the annoying, moronic and just plain stupid shit that some people do on Walkie.
Now I work in production so I can only go on about the recurring problems that we have on channel 1. I’m sure the other departments have their own stories of stupidity but these are strictly based on working in the production department. First off there’s the person that chooses to immediately press the Walkie button and start speaking no matter what is happening on the radio. This is usually the 1st AD. No matter what is going on over the radio if they need something they will usually step all over the person talking to make their needs known. Now I get it, I know the 1st AD is on a schedule and trying to move things along and that we are their to help him with that mission. That means that whenever he asks for something we get it. The problem with knowingly stepping on people is that at times either the beginning of your transmission won’t come through or none of it will. This is a problem because if you need something we may not have heard it. I know that the 1st always has to be able to chime in but I think it would help a bit if instead of just pushing the Walkie button and Talking they said something like “Breaker Breaker!” I know a few 1st that use that technique. That way it gives a buffer to the beginning of your transmission and gives everyone a second to stop talking and listen.
Next there is the what I like to call “M.C-A.D”. This is the person that does not clip their walkie mic to their shirt and therefore palms the thing, brings it way to close to their mouth like an M.C in a rap battle EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. they speak. I wish I could say that the amount of people who have this habit is small but I just can’t lie. There is a lot of mic mouthing going on in the business. This is why I always recommend that everyone at least once in their film industry career carry a second walkie or like we call it “A side arm” and listen to yourself for a day. I guarantee that you will never bring the mic that close to your mouth again. There is definitely people out there that don’t clip and have learned the range of where the mic has to be but those people are far and few in between.
Lastly there are the people who come to ask you to do something that they can do just as easy on the walkie but ask you for a reason that is still beyond me. SO, here’s an example the other day I had the 2nd A.D come up to me and ask me where the Wardrobe person was. I looked at him for a moment to try to see if there was something more to the task but when there wasn’t I jumped on the radio and asked for them. They answered and I told them to go to channel 2 for the 2nd AD he thanked me as he walked away and switched to channel 2 to speak with them. Now why he couldn’t just do that all himself, I have no idea. I do have that shit happen often enough that I had to write about it. I guess one can argue that it’s a power trip thing but some of the people who have done this are certainly not power-hungry people. It’s just weird right? Anyhow there is seriously several more I can go on about but I’ll save them for another day.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I appreciate you spending sometime here and hope I brought you with a laugh or two. As I mentioned last week beginning tomorrow and every Wednesday there will be a NEW writer and NEW section here on the site. It’ll be called “The Corner” and will be lead by my long time friend Alfredo. Have a great week everyone.
Happy Muthafuckin Friday all! How in the hell is everyone doing on this first Friday of October? You can tell that I’m in a good mood because I’m already cursing up a storm. Did you have a nice, easy week on set? Or are you contemplating quitting and literally doing anything else that doesn’t require you to be at work for 14 hours? I had a rather easy week at work. I only worked 4 days, 3 down and one more to go tomorrow (Friday). Unfortunately I believe that they will have a late call. I predict a noon call. Which will suck balls because that might mean we’ll be there till at least midnight. I don’t have any plans this Friday but I certainly don’t like working late. I’m not a bartender. I actually don’t want to be at work so I can hang out with bartenders or lets be honest here, budtenders. Let’s get into this shall we?
As I was driving to work today I noticed that according my waze app I was going to be at work 17 minutes before my call. Then I thought, I’m really good with my scheduling of when I need to be at work. I’m always early or on time to work. I have definitely been late but I’d say in my entire working career and I mean everything since I had my first job at Toys’R’us when I was 15 that lasted for a day till now I think I’ve been late probably about 30-40 times. That’s a month and half in 22 years. I mean even if I said 60 times I think that’s pretty good right? I’m basing this on the subtle observance of my family, friends and coworkers that I’ve worked with who beat my 60 over-estimate just in the time I’ve worked, knew or known them. I have friends that are late to work ALL THE TIME!! At least they use to be. However I’m not a medical professional so this can be a total bullshit thought but I think that there is definitely people who just live there life being late. They are always just 10-15 minutes behind where they need to be. I can’t stand not having control over the certain parts of my life that I can control. One of those being how early I leave to go to work. This is very controllable so I don’t understand how people continue to do it.
In the film industry they worry about being time more than they do anything else and the part I enjoy about that little tidbit is that their estimates are more often than not fucking terrible. I’m not just talking about the on set estimates either. I can’t be the only one that notices that everything going on a film crew always just seems to just be getting done or figured out just as we’re getting to it. I’ve worked on shows where the crew is moving over to a set that the set dressers just finished dressing. I’ve worked on gigs where they had no schedule a day before they had to film. There is an insane amount of examples of shitty time scheduling in our business and we worry about it about as much as we do money. Because after all time is money, right?
I remember when I was going to film school they told us that the film industry has a simple rule about being on time. That rule went like this, if you’re fifteen minutes before your calletime you’re on time, if you’re there at your calltime you’re late and if you’re 15 minutes late you should look for a new job. I don’t know where they heard this nonsense but people are on time all the time. No one gets there 15 minutes early because they will want to get paid for it. I myself do this as well. While I may get to set 15-20 minutes early there is no way I’m walking into set at that time. I always take a little relaxed 5 minutes to myself in the car, get myself together and stroll onto set 5 or so minutes before call. It’s worked out great for me this far.
I’m not sure where this post is going but I’m rather enjoying writing it. I think one of the most intriguing parts about people being late is that there is always a story. I remember back when I was a teenager I came up with a couple of lies when I was late. Then a funny thing happen. I got old and realized that at times shit happens and people are late. I came to the decision that if I ever worked with someone who gave me shit for being late I just wouldn’t work with that person. Problem solved. I like to work with sensible people. If an employee is on time and does a great job all the time they should not be treated like they are the opposite if they are late once. I have never been told anything about being late or felt disrespected but I will tell you this, I’ve seen a Fuck load of AD’s and PA’s give shit to the BG for being late. It’s truly one of the strangest acts from people I work with because I just don’t understand why you think that is your right or why you even give a flying Fuck. The AD’s and PA’s don’t pay the BG. Sure they tell them what to do on set but that doesn’t constitute a reason to give them a hard time for being late. Shit does happen at times. No one gives the actors/actresses or any of the higher-ups shit when they are late so I’m just saying, let’s be fair here. Call central if you’re really that bothered by it and move the Fuck on. Let their EMPLOYER take care of it and go chart out your blurry crosses instead which is your job. Getting back to excuses though, I love people who use excuses. I love them because I just don’t understand if they are lying to make themselves feel better or they honestly believe that the person they’re telling this to believes them. Living out in LA one of my favorite excuses is “Traffic”. I think that if you live in Los Angeles you are NEVER allowed to use the Traffic card because THERE’S ALWAYS FUCKING TRAFFIC. Plan for it like all the other adults do. Do you realize that if everyone just agreed to at the minimum put forth their best effort to get to work 10 minutes early traffic would probably be the smoothest it’s ever been. Because if you think about it, people rushing and weaving in and out of traffic because they are running late cause others to brake and shift lanes causing other cars to break and shift lanes which then causes all these little intervals of time to everyones commute. So get your shit together tardy people of the world and take control of time!! It can be yours! HAHAHA!
Thanks for reading everyone! Luckily I was totally wrong with my estimate..FIGURES and I actually have an early call tomorrow. YAY! Have an excellent weekend everyone, I appreciate you all stopping by and having a laugh with me. Please come back next week and the week after that and the week after that. Happy Muthafucking Friday everyone! How in the hell is everyone doing? How was your week? Personally with the exception of Sunday nights insanity and Monday’s aftershock it was an excellent week. I worked a few days, had a day off in the middle, the Packers whooped ass and the weekend is but a few hours away. Continue reading “I’m Part of The Crew…”
Happy Thursday!??? I know you must be wondering what the hell is going on? First the Podcast is late and now the blog post. I won’t get into too much detail here because I will be writing about it this Friday or at least I plan to. Continue reading “Yo Ho, Yo Ho A Day Players Life For Me…”
