There’s Always An Asshole…

Happy Tuesday!! I filmed nights all week last week and just couldn’t find the time to write. It wasn’t insane hours type of nights. We started at 1PM everyday and we were done by midnight. Monday was the only day we started at 8 but the other 4 days were all nights starting at 1. However they were all 12 hours or less so that overtly exhausted feeling that one feels after doing 5 14-15 hour days was non existent…at least to me. I got out at midnight on Friday and still felt like I would be able to go get a drink if I wasn’t filming in the middle of nowhere and the bars didn’t start shutting down at 1AM which is about when I got back home. People on the crew though definitely acted the same way they would if they had put in a 60 plus hour week. Which is odd and got me thinking if people are really tired or just so use to saying they are tired that they mindlessly every day go on and on about how tired they are. I do believe that most people just constantly complain about work and being tired because it’s just what most people do at work. Everyone can relate to being tired or unhappy at work and those are easy conversation starters and I think some people just say the shit at times as part of their daily routine. I use to do it too. I remember years ago there was a day when someone asked me how I was and I said “Exhausted”. We spoke for a few minutes after that and as soon as they walked away I though to myself “I’m not exhausted at all. Why’d I say that?”. This is the type of shit that goes on in my head all day long. Welcome. Lets get into this shall we?

It’s been a while since I told a story on here but I got one today! Alright so a few weeks ago I worked on a Non Union show. I haven’t worked on one of these in quite some time as the last 3-4 years of my life have all been taken up by Union TV shows and the occasional regular to big budget movie that’s filming in town. I quickly learned or I should say was reminded that the lower the budget the more unhappy assholes there typically tends to be on the crew. I’m talking about those people who walk around and you know you’ve never seen them smile. They just have RBF from the moment they step out of their car. They say shit like “Do you know how long I’ve been doing this?” a lot and use it as a reason for why they know it all and shall not be questioned. These assholes come in all ages, genders and races too. The unhappiness gets to many in our business and honestly while it’s sad it also pisses me off that most people let these people get away with this nonsense.

Alright so back to what I was saying…This crew that I was working with was actually pretty asshole free given its scale and that’s always a good thing. People that are unhappy assholes on set make everything that much more unpleasant and that is a terrible thing. Because if you are working full-time and in a position that requires you to deal with these assholes you know that you are going to have to do that for the duration of the project and that can at times be enough to make you question all of your career choices. I had only been on this show for 2 days before I met what I’m starting to suspect was the only asshole on that show because everyone else was great. This person is a prop master and while our incident was short it was the perfect example of these unhappy assholes that continue to work in our business because they know someone that’ll hire them. I was actually happy that this happen because as many of you know one of the reasons I started this blog was to discuss people and when they act in these ridiculous ways. People that clearly want to believe that we are curing cancer instead of making a movie.

SO…we were filming at a department store and one of the prop guys showed me where he had put the cast chairs. I always show the cast to their chairs as this is part of my job. I then realized that there was better seating placement for the chairs and asked him if he could move them. Then I thought “Shit, I’m an asshole. Let me just offer to move them.” You know, I wanted to “help”. Why in the Fuck did I think of doing that? I asked him if he wanted me to move them so he could continue working on whatever else he had to do because I mean after all it’s JUST A FUCKING CHAIR…and he said “Sure”. I then pick up the chairs and as I turn the corner The Prop Nazi…I mean Prop Master comes up and says…I’ll write this out in dialog form:

Prop Master: Drop the chairs. Why are you moving the chairs?

Me: I found a better spot for them and asked your assistant if I could help moving them.

Prop Master: Props moves the chairs.

Me: I know and I would not move anything without asking and that’s what I did.

Prop Master: Props moves the chairs. You wouldn’t move a ballast.

At this moment I realized that this person ignored everything I said and like a fucking cyborg repeated “Props moves the chairs.” twice now. I can spot an asshole instantly and my radar went off as soon as this lunatic said “Put down the chairs.” like he was a cop and I was holding a weapon. I walked away immediately and after calming down and gathering my thoughts I went to the UPM to let them know what had happen and that if it happen again I would kindly just go home. I’ve said this multiple times and will continue to as long as I shall live. I don’t need any job where I feel disrespected. There’s too many great and wonderful people to work with to even consider putting up with these assholes for a few hours. Sure he still worked there but I did see the UPM address it right after I brought it up. More people should do that. NO one out there is above anyone. It’s a title given to them by their boss who was given their title by their boss and so on and so forth. Some bosses worked for their position and some were given it. Bottom line, we are all employees of someone and no one has the right to disrespect anyone else and when this type of shit happens it’s your right and responsibility to speak up and if it costs you your job then you speak up even louder.

Shortly after telling the UPM I of course did what I feel most of us do and I IMDBed this special person to see what he had worked on. As soon as I saw the list of people he had worked with his assholeness made so much more sense. Assholes for the most part like to travel in groups and after some light searching on this persons name I found him linked to Joe Ptyka. A notorious commercial director and renowned asshole. Everyone knows he’s an asshole and yet they continue to give him work. Sadly rewarding bad behavior is a specialty in our industry and one we will soon get into here on the site at another time because this post is now over!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I hope you enjoyed the read and if you did feel free to send a like, follow, message…anything really. They track all the traffic that happens on the site so all traffic is good traffic. Have an excellent week everyone and don’t be an asshole.

It’s Low Budget BUT It Should Be Fun…

Happy..Thursday?…Yeah…I know, I know…Let’s just carry on alright. We all know I suck with the timing of these things lately. How has everyone’s week been so far? It’s been a little hot out here in LA LA. Definitely not anywhere near as hot as back where I call…called?… home, Miami is definitely hotter. It was uncomfortable to sleep those first couple of nights but besides the heat my week has been fantastic so far. I had the most EXCELLENT weekend that smoothly transitioned into another one of those “Holy shit, I will remember this day forever…or until I get old and senile and can’t remember how to poop let alone this” days. Monday I got to work as a DGA 2nd AD on a Commercial for the first time since receiving my acceptance letter. YAY!!..well almost yay…it’s like half a yay more of a YA! There’s still a few other steps in the process to fully be in…in. My days were accepted and now I’m on the hunt for 150 days but as a 2nd AD. The ways to acquire these days is still a bit odd to me and honestly seem like a giant pain in the ass for a lot of people. Out of the 150 days 75 have to be on Commercials and most people who work on TV and Film don’t have many of those contacts. Weird right? One would think that they are all sort of the same but no no. There is those that work on Commercials and those that do TV and Film and rarely do you find people who do both seamlessly. I was fortunate enough to have worked on many commercials when I first got out here and still have many of those contacts so hopefully I can snag those 150 rather quickly but who the hell knows what’s going to happen. I’m not really a fan of how tough they make this process after the initial 600. I was told it’s structured so that it can weed out those that can’t take it but I don’t know if that works. I mean I’ve worked with some pretty terrible people who it may have taken them forever to get the days but they did and now they are working. Just fucking up shit everywhere they go. HA! I’m just saying I think the process past the 600 should be reevaluated and restructured to help people who really deserve to be out there working because then hopefully they get in and weed out those that have snuck in and aren’t good at their jobs. I’ve seen many great people stuck in what I’ve heard a few refer to as “DGA Purgatory”. It’s a terrible place where PA’s that worked their ass off for years to collect 600 days now wander around aimlessly trying to get another 150 days over the course of another bunch of years for some. Alright that was the longest into ever…let’s get into this shall we?

“It’s low-budget but it should be fun” is one of those texts that one receives from time to time and if you’ve been in the business long enough you know this really may mean “We have no fucking money and this is going to be a shit show”. I remember doing a few jobs when I started that used this phrase and I will tell you this much they were ALL shit shows. No crafty, drop off lunch or some fast food burgers, 16-17 hour day, multiple departments sharing trucks, terrible locations. Did you notice the first 2 examples I stated were both food related? That’s because I love food and so do most people and when you don’t have good food for people to graze on as they work through YOUR 16 hour day they get angry. Anger leads to frustration and stress. Before you know it everyone is in a bad mood and just trying to wrap this thing up so they can forget this atrocious fucking day.

HELPFUL TIP: FEED YOUR FUCKIN’ CREW

I’ve never done a helpful tip but I thought I’d start…or this may be a one time thing who knows. See the thing is that in this industry just about every show is only one monkey wrench away from it itself becoming a shit show. I’ve been on really great sets that worked efficiently and seemed to be the perfect dream job only to have one small thing go wrong that ruins the entire day and even the rest of the show in some cases. So since every show seems to be so close to being a disaster when someone calls or texts you and right off the bat is already saying shit like “low-budget”, “should be fun”, “It shouldn’t be bad” which we know is code for this is a shit show, we all automatically assume that this will INDEED be a shit show. The show hasn’t even started and this person that’s hiring crew is already observing how terrible it’s going to be. It’s almost like an internal defense mechanism that springs into action to prepare you mentally for the hell that you’re about to go through. It’s as if admitting that it’s going to be horrible will make it a bit less horrible because when you’re in the nightmare you can tell yourself and others around you shit like “I told you it was going to be tough”.

That’s going to do it for this one ladies and gents. Thank you for stopping by and checking out another post here on We’re Not Rolling. I appreciate you spending sometime to read more of my madness. Have a fantastic rest of your week, till next time…

I Don’t Run…

The happiest of Tuesdays to you all. May it be filled with amazing moments and many Tacos. Thanks for stopping by to check out a NEW post here at We’re Not Rolling. I would apologize for my absence last week but I’m going to stop doing that because I don’t want to go back and read these someday and read 800 apologies. Sometimes I just don’t write and that’s how it’s going to be from now on so I don’t keep feeling guilty all day when I don’t write. Don’t get me wrong if I start getting paid for these I will happily post more frequently but I’m not. Moving on, I worked yesterday and I’m working today as well. Then I may have one more day of employment on Thur and then it’s the weekend!! At least for me it is…I’ll be off for at least 6 days and then I’m going to go work on a pilot for 8 days. Which I’m really looking forward to because it’s with one of my favorite humans that I worked alongside for 4 years on “Casual” for Hulu. You know who you are! Well if you’re reading this thing that is. Alright let’s get into this shall we?

I don’t know at what age I decided that I was not going to run anymore but I did. I’m not saying I absolutely never run. I have gone on runs in the past, now I just walk. I will also occasionally jog playfully with my dog but besides that I don’t run. I know that may sound odd to some of you out there but I don’t tell you how to live your life so just let me be. Honestly I never enjoyed running as an activity. I hate that feeling of gasping for air and I’m not a fan of sweating as you may or may not know. Running is a really quick way for me to sweat. I’m just thinking about running now and I’m feeling a bit hot. HA!

I know what you may be thinking…you’re asking yourself why is this blabbering lunatic going on about running..well because in this business and particularly in my department at times certain people expect you to run. They won’t tell you to run directly most times but they’ll say shit like “We need to make that happen faster”, “Can you speed that up”. Which I must say is just fucking entirely strange to me. I find it extremely mind-blowing that one grown adult feels they have this right to ask another grown adult to run. We make movies, tv shows, commercials…we’re not cops chasing a thief or fireman racing to a fire. We’re not racing anything but the schedule that those that ask us to rush made. My work should not have to be rushed because of your piss poor planning. I will also mention that if we don’t manage to get something filmed then we typically reschedule it or get rid of it all together. There should never be a moment where anyone is expected to run for something on any set unless it’s an emergency and that person is running for help. My no run policy isn’t exclusive to this business either. I was a cook for 5 years and I would have never ran if my boss asked me to. I don’t get paid to run…none of us do and we should never be expected to do so.

This is not a new concept everyone. Think about when you were a kid, there was people constantly telling you not to run. Why? Because you could hurt yourself. This still holds true as adults. People do dumb shit when you ask them to run because you’re rushing them. Especially if they don’t run often which one can tell immediately because their gallop will not be fluid. When one rushes to do something that is when mistakes happen and I just won’t let that happen to me. I can’t even tell you how many P.A’s and A.D’s I’ve seen Fuck themselves up because they were running or rushing to do something. I’ve seen people fall and sprain ankles ALL THE TIME.

I have only been asked to run over the radio once on a show during my career and I’ll tell you now I sure as Fuck did not. We were filming out in the middle of the desert in 103 degree heat. I was about 200 yards away from where the crew was filming clearing some cones for the shot when the 1st A.D jumped on the radio and said “Hey we need you to hustle, can you run please.” I responded “I’m not running, clearing the shot momentarily.” Guess what happen? I cleared the cones and they rolled camera just like the would’ve done if I would’ve run only it happen 30 seconds later. I went and talked to the 1st A.D afterward and explained to him my not running rule and he understood. He said at times he’s just under the gun and not thinking. I get it but at the same time, I feel people need to have some guts and stand up to those that are placing them under the gun. We are making media to entertain everyone. There is no reason to risk getting injured by running and rushing like crazy people. I’ve seen grips running wrapped in tools around their belts and I can’t help but think of my teacher back in the day telling me not to run with scissors. And now here we have a grown man/woman running with screw drivers, knives, rope that can tangle them up as they run rushing to get the boss some other heavy dangerous looking apparatus that can also cause some damage to themselves if they fall while rushing back with it. Stop running like crazy people everyone. You’re risking your safety for absolutely nothing. You do not get paid to run. You get paid to do you job and do it well not to do your job at a speed that someone else sees fit.

Alright and now that I just went on about running for an entire post I’m going to let you all carry on with your day. Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. Have an excellent week at work and hopefully I’ll have a NEW Fuck It Friday post for you this week, till then…

Experience Over Money…

Happy Tuesday! How was everyones long weekend? I apologize to those that had to work yesterday. I had BBQ all 3 days. Which is one of my favorite food groups….Yes…I consider BBQ a food group in my life. HA! I don’t believe I have ever had anything off a grill that I did not enjoy. Veggies, Fruit, Crab, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Bacon, Pizza…mmmmmm! It’s all simply amazing. I think I may gill some chicken breast today as a mater of fact. I mean I’ve already gone 3 days might as well keep the streak going. Alright let’s get into this shall we?

I realized the other day when a friend of mine hooked me up with a job that I have never written about some of the rules that I set for myself when I began working in this business. These rules that I slowly built on over the years have helped me keep a sane mind about this business. The reason my rules even popped up in my head was because this gig was breaking one of them however it also brought another one of my rules into the same argument so I thought I’d write about it. Shortly after accepting the gig I asked my buddy about the payroll company and he let me know that it takes this company a month to pay out. This was a deal breaker for me. One of my rules is that I don’t work for companies that take more than the customary in every other FUCKING business in this country 2 weeks to pay me. If some of you are wondering how long that rule has been working for me in the 12 years I’ve been in this business I will say that have not worked on show that did not pay me weekly in the last 5 years. WEEKLY! How a company gets away with taking a month to pay its employees is beyond me. However one of my other rules that came into play during this current situation was that I don’t back out of job. Once I agree to work on something I am committed. I don’t jump off shows. Now if a gigantic opportunity arises say I’m working on a 3 day show and I get called for a 3 month show I would first ask if I can miss the 3 days on the 3 month show and if not then I would talk to my boss on the 3 day gig and see what they say. If they say they need me those 3 days then I’m there because like I said, I don’t back out of gigs. If that costs me the 3 month gig then so be it. I’ve been doing this a long time and I now another show will pop up. I won’t sit there and whine about losing the 3 month gig like so many do. It’s work, get the Fuck over it. Some people miss out on jobs and complain like they lost a puppy if they don’t get it. I will say this though, I don’t work for anyone who would advise me not to take that 3 month gig and if I ever did then I would never work for that person again after that because if they are willing to hold me back from a potential better opportunity for myself, in this example the 3 month gig then I don’t want to work for that person. I like working for people who want everyone to succeed not just themselves. I think if more people had rules of their own they wouldn’t have such a sour taste about this industry in their mouth but unfortunately many chase the money in this business before chasing the experience, which is the rule I want to elaborate on.

I don’t chase money. I don’t know why that is such a far-fetched concept to everyone in my life but to date every time I tell this to someone this they look at me like I’m from Mars. I get the allure of money. It fills our life up with nice stuff, vacations, shelter…everything really. One definitely needs money to live which is very unfortunate because there are many that will never have money and millions that die because of it around the world. Money is the root of all evil may be one of the truest sayings ever. I have first hand witnessed people change once they started making better money. I’ve seen good people morph into shallow terrible representations of their formal selves once they stopped having to constantly check on their bank account to see if they can make that impulse buy. It sucks. I don’t like what it does to some people and I think that’s why I have always been reluctant to let money be a driving force in my life, like most do. This is odd for me because money is always one topic that most people can relate to when talking to one another. There’s many sayings like “As long as you’re getting paid” and “I’m just here to collect a check” that I could never relate to. Sure I’ve done it from time to time but over the years I’ve slowly stopped having to rely on jobs that made me feel like I was just there to get paid and instead were jobs that I enjoyed the simple experience of being there. So when I realized years ago that I would rather have a better experience on a gig than worry about the money I was getting paid this made my decision on which shows to take a bit easier. This rule also helped me avoid working with people who I did not enjoy working alongside which I find many people do. There are hundreds if not thousands of people in this business right now working for bosses that they absolutely hate but that continue to hire them and so they feel they can’t say no. FUCK THAT! Say no! I’m just saying there is no amount of money that is going to buy back your sanity if you let this business destroy it.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I appreciate you spending some time here reading some of my madness. I hope you all have a fantastic week and make sure to stop by on Friday for an all NEW “Fuck It Friday” post that may but will probably have nothing to do with the industry as I’m trying to venture out into new territory by blogging about broader topics. Alright everyone be good and till next time…
