Failing Upwards…

Happy Tuesday! How are you doing? I apologize for not posting on Friday but Mother Nature brought 6 feet of snow to Mammoth Mountain here in sunny California and I had to take a mini trip up to enjoy the fluffy white stuff…I’m talking about snow not cocaine alright. I contemplated writing it once I got back but then sleep, football, the Podcast and everything else happen and I just thought I’d wait. Continue reading “Failing Upwards…”

Is It A Power Thing…

Happy Tuesday!! How is everyone on this fabulous day? It’s currently Monday in my world and I’m working over at Warner Brothers today in Burbank. It’s a little warm out here for October and I’m not a fan….I actually would love a fan…Hmmm. Tomorrow however I’m working in Simi Valley and I have a 530am calltime. If you have never been to Simi Valley consider yourself a very lucky human being and carry on with your happy no Simi Valley life. No, I’m joking..maybe. It’s just way too much desert and heat for my liking out there. I like the dark and cold. Much like what this business is doing to my heart the longer I hang around. FUNNY! Anyhow, it’s (Simi Valley) a 4o minute drive so that means that I will be up at 4 tomorrow and out the door by 430am. The only bright side of that is that I will be up at 4:20 and we should be done early-ish. It’s 6:30PM right now. That means that I will have to be back at work within the next 10 hours. Doesn’t that sound like total insanity? You too can live the dream like all of us if you join the film industry today! Moving on, I will say that I’m working on 2 different shows and that’s why this is happening. I’m on a different show tomorrow than the one I am working on today. Usually I would avoid this type of situation because I value my health and therefore rarely overwork myself but I only have 4 days this week so I know, I’ll be alright. I know I’m such a baby. Whatever, it’s my life everyone, stop judging and go live yours how you want. Enough of this shit, let’s get into this shall we?

“So it’s a power thing?” was a question I overheard a Background performer ask a Production Assistant the other day. The PA was giving them shit for not doing something they asked on Set and was pretty bent out of shape over it. I know I’m never really bent out of shape at work and therefore it always looks like everyone is in a pissy mood to me but this persons anger was definitely boiling. The question stayed in my head because I know the answer, it’s “Fuck yes it’s a power thing!” Most ADs and PAs always have this illusionary power over the BG. Actually wait I stand corrected if we’re going to talk about people who think they have this extreme seniority over the BG it’s the whole crew. I written about it many times but let’s get back to the Production Department. At times some do think that they are like these fucking kings and queens playing human chess and that all the BG is there to do their bidding and not question or have a say in the matter. I’m not by any way trying to insinuate that they have them do anything that is not pertaining to work. I’m saying that how they speak to the BG at times to ask them to do something makes the AD/PA at times come off as he is trying to throw his power around. It’s like watching a drill sargent with his recruits, a parent with their underaged child, or that asshat 😉 boss that we’ve all had and hated. Think about that last one. We’ve all had that boss. Even the asshats had that asshat boss before they became an asshat. How can anyone let themselves become that boss?

I’m not a power-hungry person. I mean I don’t have problem with it but I’m just not the type of person that is on this endless chase of power & money. I’ve managed many people in my lifetime in a few different industries and not once have I ever spoken down to anyone. I’ve never tried to strut my position in someones face as a threat. I’m a realistic person. I know that whatever title was given to me was just that “given to me”. Someone gave me that title. Sure I may have earned it by working my ass to get it but being a shit to people isn’t a requirement. It’s a title, it has no real power. This isn’t like the medieval ages where you had titles attached to your name because of the countries you conquered or training you acquired. You knew someone, worked with someone or interviewed with someone who gave you the job. It amazes me the amount of people who get a title and totally change their attitude on set at times. It’s like the Jekyll and Hyde effect. I’m not the only one who notices this either. The crew is always quick to acknowledge someones attitude change when given a promotion. I find that so fucking strange. While I can say that I’m a bit more held back at work than in my personal life I don’t think I could ever do a full 360 at work because I’m placed in a different position. I mean I would obviously change my work habits for the new job but my attitude? The way I act and interact with everyone around me. I can’t change that for anyone let alone a job.

I’m just saying I feel that some people need to take a step back at times when they are bossing people around and think about how to go about it. Some people out there just need to work on their technique a bit. No one should ever just bark out orders and expect people to respond positively. Instead of trying to show off your title why not try to make it better and really understand it. I can tell you right now there’s not one job out there that being a power-hungry asshole is a requirement…at least not one that I know of.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out another post. Before I wrap this up I want to say that I’ve been promising you guys some new content on here for a while and next Wednesday we will finally be featuring an all new section here at We’re Not Rolling. It will be written by one of my best friends & business partners. I can’t wait to bring you all some of this mans stuff. He’s got a great, creative mind and I know he will add that much more to this little home that’s been built online. Have a great rest of your week and make sure to stop by on Friday for an all New post.

Lock It Up…

Happy Tuesday! Yes that’s right, Tuesday. I know things were a little crazy last week and due to some unforeseen circumstances I was forced to adjust the day I put out last weeks Tuesday post but all is back to normal…well as normal as can be. Continue reading “Lock It Up…”

Are They Listening, Do They Care…

Happy Friday! I’m going to be straight up with you now, this will be a rant. I’ll try and keep some comedy in there because honestly laughter will get you through almost anything. I love laughing and as of the last 7-8 years I love to smile too. I know that sounds odd, you might be thinking.. doesn’t everyone smile? Continue reading “Are They Listening, Do They Care…”

Caring Doesn’t Pay…

Happy Friday! I just worked a full week for the first time in 4 months. That’s crazy…I mean I wasn’t planning on it working out that way. If you read the blog weekly you would know that I thought I was going back on a show that well…I didn’t. So here I am in the world of the unknown, jumping from show to show. It gets so crazy at times that I forget exactly what it is that I’m on. Continue reading “Caring Doesn’t Pay…”

Right Place, Right Time….

Hello, welcome to We’re Not Rolling Old and New visitors. How was your weekend? I had both a good and bad weekend. Let’s get to the bad first because always sucks. It was bad because I have lots of family and friends in Florida that stayed there for Irma. This fucking Hurricane gave me the most stressful 10 days I believe I’ve ever had. I was really worried about everyone. Continue reading “Right Place, Right Time….”

Hey Where’d You Buy Those…

Greetings and Salutations from Tuesday…even though I’m writing this on Monday…Huh? Well, it’s probably sentences like that why people read my blog and then never return. HAHAHA! I’m joking, I think people are coming back. I keep trying to recruit people to share some stuff on here because I fear that some of you may be growing weary of my unpredictable writing style. Can I even call this a style? Continue reading “Hey Where’d You Buy Those…”

Living The Dream…

Happy FriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiDAY!!! We made it! Another small life repetitive triumph. You know every Friday that I write that on all my social media platforms “Happy Friday” “Cheers to Friday” some corny crap like that before I take a break from it all on the weekend, I think…”People that work on the weekend must really, REALLY hate that phrase. Continue reading “Living The Dream…”

Apply Here for Passive Aggressiveness…

Happy Tuesday! How are you all doing today? I day played yesterday…which is really today…I’m currently sitting with the BG in holding typing this. Which is pretty convenient I must say. It’s been a pretty easy day so far and its suppose to be short so here’s hoping because we did have an 11am call. If you haven’t listened to yesterday’s Toke Talking Podcast make sure to check it out. I have a good friend on there that works at Marvel and gives us a few cool stories. Alright enough jibber jabber let’s get into this shall we?

First I’d like to clear up that was not the end of the Jibbering and Jabbering because that is really what I do best. HA! Moving on! I had originally written this out and then thought…why not just make the meme so WALA! Feel free to spread it amongst the internet. I know it’s an old one but do these things (memes) really age? Hmmmm. Passive aggressiveness, a condition that although I’m guilty of committing myself I try with all of my will to never do it at work because well…IT’S WORK! I don’t get upset at work or when I do, it last about 2 minutes before I realize that I’m at work and how ridiculous it is to get upset. If I was a surgeon, a cop, a judge…someone whose job has a direct impact on others lives then I can understand being stressed out. However making a TV show or a Movie…not as stressful. I know, I know…producers and some of you others out there are probably bent out of shape over that comment because they’ll claim that I will never understand the pressure of producing a movie and worrying if it’s going to do well. To which I reply this, I can guarantee that I would still give as much a shit as I do right now. Because one thing I can guarantee for Fucking certain is that my personal stress level is not going to help the movie do better. Laying in bed stressed out and taking my anger out on others is not going to help the movie do better. A long time ago I figured out how silly it was to get stressed out or angry over matters that you have absolute zero control over. I’m not sure why everyone doesn’t know this already but it’s a lesson that when I learned I never let it go. This is a good one too..

However getting back to the levels of Passive Aggression in this industry. Some of you out there seriously should wear a GoPro chest harness all day so when you get home you can review the footage and see first hand what a whack job some of you are. I thought of writing about this because there is no way in the world that anyone can go on any set and not overhear or observe at least one passive aggressive move. Today, at the TOP OF THE MORNING! Everyone is just hanging out at breakfast and this one special crew member gets there, eats and then just hangs out. I see him walking around while other crew members are all loading into vans. Well what happens next, the last van leaves for set and the van that we’re using to transport the BG to base camp (Which is not near set) gets back. I jump in the van with the BG and guess who comes strolling up to get in a van and wants to go to set, it’s crew member guy that was just hanging out watching all the vans leave till he was ready to leave to grace the set with his presence. He wants to go to set and so the driver tells him “There will be a van that goes to set coming shortly. This van is just for the BG for base camp.” Then this very amazing human being in response vomits this garbage collection of words  “Oh really, the BG is more important than the crew. Ok cool.” and shuts the door. Dude really? First let me make it absolutely clear that not ONE of you out there are any important than anyone else. I get that they write your name next to a title and you feel that gives you some type of super power that makes you better and more important than other people but NEWFLASH “You are not special. You’re not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You’re the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We’re all part of the same compost heap. We’re all singing, all dancing crap of the world.”-Chuck Palahniuk

If you don’t like something don’t be a fucking child and say you don’t like it and then don’t do it. It’s really that fucking simple. However don’t do it and then act like a ass while you do it spewing your anger through in every sentence you utter. It’s not other peoples problems that you aren’t man or woman enough to say how you really feel. So instead you hide your true feeling in little annoying responses and I really think some of you should seek help for. It’s not cool to be a dick to people covertly like that. We work a lot of hours and I understand that at times we do get a bit heated and shit gets said. I’m not talking about those, one and a while moments, I’m talking about people that do it all the time. I’m talking about people that have this reputation. People whose middle name should actually be Passive Aggressive. Hahaha! Lighten folks, it’s just Film Making.

Thank you for stopping by and checking out another post here on the ole We’re Not Rolling. I truly appreciate all of you, even if you don’t read my blog you too are appreciated. Have an excellent week everyone. Make sure to stop by and check the Friday post for one last laugh before the weekend. Be good to one another and next time your head starts to boil and you feel a smart ass comment about to come out of your mouth STOP and think about pizza, cheeseburgers, puppies, chocolate…basically anything that makes you happy. Hopefully the thought will bring some awareness to what really matters in life, hint…it’s not your job.

The No Fun Department…

Happy Friday!! The weekend is finally here for all of you hard-working folks out there. Plus it’s 4th of July weekend! I’m sure some of you lucky folks out there probably have a nice 4 day weekend coming up. I’m off again so it’s back to vacation mode. I don’t have any plans for the 4th yet but I’m sure something will materialize. I keep going on about going camping but taking no action so maybe that is what I’ll do. However I’m sure allocating a spot with this short notice will be close to impossible. I really just want to go camp on the beach somewhere for the night. UHHH!! I don’t know..whatever let’s get into this shall we?

I often compare the production department to that of the parents on the set. They go around making sure everyone is behaving and being safe. When the crew starts to have fun and get a little out of hand, it is the production department whose duty it is to step in and stop the fun…control the kids if you will. The no fun department will go around and tell everyone to be quiet when they are loud and spend their time shouting instructions at everyone. The NFD…you know like the NFL…I’ll let you figure it out, always likes to be in control of everything going on and tend to get a little hurt when someone tries to take their reigns. You know, like parents with their kids when they are contested. This is by far my least favorite part about working in this department and honestly I don’t fit or practice the format. While I do enjoy controlling most parts of my life at work I don’t want that responsibility. I just want to get there, do my thing and get out. I don’t want to be the guy telling people who are working 14 hours a day and hardly see their families that they can’t have a laugh at crafty when someone cracks a joke because they are doing a marking rehearsal with 2nd team. I’m not saying I don’t do any of these things, I do, I just do them in my own way…not the “production department” way. Which I have no other way to explain other than being kind of douche baggy.

Yeah you know what I’m talking about, I’m talking about all those A.D’s and P.A’s that think if they were not in this business there would be no entertainment. The television would just be black with nothing to watch. I’m talking about the one’s that draw out color coded maps of BG crossings and then publicly ridicule them when they miss their cue so they can feel like the big man/woman on campus. I’m PRODUCTION! FEEL MY WRATH!! ROLLING!!!

If this were school the production department would be like the teachers while the rest of the crew would be the kids. I want to be with the kids! I don’t want to be the adult telling adults how to adult. If they can’t figure it out by now there is no hope. This is a perfect example of why there are sayings like ‘You can’t teach a old dog new tricks.’

A great exemplar of this acting as the adults while the rest of the crew gets to have fun is the picture-taking rules we get at times. I’ve been on multiple projects where the production department gets a briefing before we film where we’re told that as the production department we need to be professional and that absolutely no pictures will be allowed. Meanwhile the rest of the crew gets to geek out with whatever talent we are working with and take pictures that will make their memories of their time in this business unforgettable. Why? Why do we need to hold ourselves to different standards? I mean who do we think we are fooling? Whenever there is someone famous around everyone knows how fucking cool it feels. We all want to be around them. Look I’m not saying we should go geek out crazy and do a photo shoot with every single actor/actress we work with but I don’t think we should hold ourselves to different set of standards just because we want to seem all superior and shit. If the person we are working with specifically mentions that they don’t want to be bothered by pictures, fine. I get that and I think everyone should respect their wishes but if they don’t say anything why ruin our time in this business. I think most of us that work here are here because we love entertainment. The people in front of the camera may seem like they are in a totally different world but they are essentially our co-workers. We may not hang out on the weekends or meet up at the company picnic but for 12 hours a day, 5 days a week we work alongside one another.

I’ve actually brought this up to several thespians that I’ve worked with and all of them have said that they never mind doing anything for someone in the crew. I think what happens is that some of us assume that actresses and actors look at us like fans that are clawing at them as they try to get a coffee at starbucks and that’s far from the truth. Almost every person that I have worked with has been nothing but respectful of the crew and the process. I know it’s crazy to think about but these people can’t film themselves and we need people to film. We need one another. I will be honest, I’ve only had 2-3 instances where I was told not to take pictures and I did because I just could not pass up the chance at capturing the memory. I’m not an idiot, I’m not going to post it or share anything like this. These moments were not moments that I wanted to capture to share with others but just to share with my old self when I’m losing my mind in my old age. So in conclusion production department people, if you feel like you are a member of the NFD try to relax a little bit on the next show and enjoy yourself. It’s film making not surgery.

Thank you for reading another entry here at We’re Not Rolling everyone. I hope you all have a fantastic holiday weekend. I’m just saying this now if there’s no post on Tue I probably chose to celebrate instead of writing but I’m sure that a post will pop up on Wed. I think I’ll be alright, I might try to write it over the weekend by the pool since I haven’t written out there in a while. Be good to one another, talk to y’all next week!
