To Watch or Not To Watch…

Happy Tuesday! How is everyone doing this week so far? I was off yesterday and today fortunately but I got some work coming up the next 2 days…or it may only be 1 day as I just noticed that one of the jobs never called me back yesterday. This probably means I won’t be on it but either way it’s cool. I remember being a bit upset back in the day when a job would place me on hold then not book me. Now I can honestly care less, I actually welcome the time off. I always have a set goal of money that I need to make each month and once that goal is met I rather take the days off and work on my own material. Anyhow let’s get into this shall we?

Today’s topic is about this moral dilemma that I’ve been going through recently about working in this business. Actually to be more specific it’s about working alongside certain people in this business than the gig itself. In a few weeks there’s a show starting up on FOX called The Gifted. The show is helmed by Bryan Singer. Singer directed such hollywood hits as The Usual Suspects, some of the X-Men films and Superman Returns amongst many others. His resume as a Producer is even more extensive, with producing credits on the movies/shows he directed and also on shows such as House and more currently the FX hit Legion. The guy has been around and making money for hollywood for years. His first 2 X-Men films grossed $700 million worldwide, that’s big time money. Money and power go hand in hand. Singer is a power house in the film industry. Now back to my dilemma, if one knows about Singer’s history one knows that the guy doesn’t exactly sound like the good person we all wished he was. It’s tough to hear that people like this that are responsible for some our favorite movies aren’t the cool, good-hearted people we all imagine. However if you look into Singer’s life outside of the film world he actually sounds like quite the piece of shit to humanity. The guy has a history of sexual abuse allegations with underage boys that is troubling to say the least. I don’t usually directly source material on here but there’s a first time for everything and this important to the topic at hand so here’s Singer’s troubles summed up on Wikipedia.

In 1997, a 14-year-old extra accused Singer of asking him and other minors to film a shower scene in the nude for the film Apt Pupil. A lawsuit was filed but dismissed for insufficient evidence.[31][32]

In April 2014, Singer was accused in a civil lawsuit of sexual assault of a minor. According to the suit filed by attorney Jeff Herman, Singer is alleged to have drugged and raped actor and model Michael Egan in Hawaii and Los Angeles in the late 1990s.[33] Singer’s attorney called the allegations “completely fabricated” and said Singer planned to countersue.[34] Singer denied the allegations in a statement calling them “outrageous, vicious, and completely false.”[35] On May 22, 2014, Singer’s attorney presented evidence to Federal District Judge Susan Oki Mollway stating that neither Singer nor Egan were in Hawaii at the time.[36] In early August 2014, Egan sought to withdraw his lawsuit via a Request for Court Order of Dismissal, and asked that it be granted “without prejudice or an award of costs or fees, in the interest of justice.”

In May 2014, another lawsuit was filed by attorney Jeff Herman on behalf of an anonymous British man. Both Singer and producer Gary Goddard (who was also named separately in the first case) were accused of sexually assaulting “John Doe No. 117.” According to the lawsuit, Goddard and Singer met the man for sex when he was a minor and engaged in acts of “gender violence” against him while in London for the premiere of Superman Returns.[37] The charge against Singer in this case was dismissed, at the accuser’s request, in July 2014.[38] The case against Goddard remained active.[citation needed]

Singer is cited in the 2014 documentary film on child sexual abuse in Hollywood, An Open Secret, though the film makes no specific allegations against him.[39]

Pretty grim right? This fucking guy is STILL making films and shows like all is good. If any average person was accused of any of the above they’d probably already be locked up. This documentary “An Open Secret” is on Youtube and I have to say may be what made me want to write this post. When you have time you should definitely check it out. Even though the film makes no specific allegations towards Singer it was truly troubling to listen to some of the stories of the shit that occurred in that house in Encino at which Singer was said to visit from time to time. The more research you do on all these cases the more one starts to notice that this is clearly a case of one side having all the power and therefore basically paying for their freedom by making deals with victims behind closed doors. These are all very powerful rich men that are being accused by less fortunate people who literally can’t afford to take on them. Here’s an article written back in 2014 titled Bryan Singer Sex Abuse Case: The Troubling History Behind the Accusations. In it The Hollywood Reported (THR) goes a little more into depth about all these accusations and all the men attached to the story. I won’t go through the whole article but here’s a part I found interesting:

Singer long has been known to have an affinity for a certain type of man. “Bryan’s always had a reputation of being with guys that look young,” says a high-level studio executive who oversaw one of the director’s big comic-book movies. “Whether they were underage or not, I have no idea. [But] for 20 years he’s had young guys around him, whether they’re assistants or friends. However they were described to you, they were always around.”

While I have never worked for Singer and I don’t ever plan to, people talk and this is definitely something that I’ve heard from crew people who have worked with him. They claim that he always has young men around him and that there is always a young assistant at his side. This is fucked up and I really am starting to have a problem with the fact that all of us that are around these types of people aren’t doing enough to stop them. Yes, I’m talking about the crew. A perfect example of this is this person quoted above, I’m not sure who the “high-level” studio executive is but you’re an Executive! How can you just stand there and turn a blind eye when the director in charge of the film/show that you’re producing may be a pedophile. I won’t do it, I can’t do it. This show that I mentioned earlier The Gifted, if I was called to work on it I have to say that I would have to pass on the gig. I know that as crew we are merely pawns in this film industry. I know that many will argue that they need to make a living and that hollywood is ALL corrupted. I know some believe that if you dig deep enough on any hollywood project one can find some illegal or moral wrong doing but shouldn’t we take some responsibility for acknowledging the Fuck up ness and not doing anything about it? While this guy (Singer) hasn’t been convicted we can’t all just stand on the sidelines and continue to work and support people like this. We all know very well that the only reason he hasn’t been found guilty and locked up is because he has money, power and has friends with the same attributes. So you can call it a protest if you’d like but I won’t be watching this show. I actually am going to make it a point to try to not watch anything that Singer directs from here on out. I know I’m just one person and that millions will still tune in, the show looks like it will be successful but after all I’ve learned I just cannot continue to support people like this or the projects they are attached to. There are millions of people out there that dream of directing and making movies. Why are we denying them their chance by continuing to give shits like this work?

Thanks for stopping by and reading another post here at We’re Not Rolling. I apologize that this wasn’t one of my uplifting funny post but this is something that I have been meaning to write about. I love this business but its dark side that hides topics like this really continue to go on with no real repercussions for any of it’s accused is something that has to be discussed and addressed. While I’m just one voice on a blog amongst millions I will share my thoughts on it and do what I can. It’s all we can do as individuals in hopes that the information spreads. Have a fantastic week at work, make sure to check out The Toke Talking Podcast every Monday and NEW blog posts every Tuesday and Friday.
